Ants have taken over my lawn

We moved into a house this past spring and the house is only 4 years old. The previous owner didn't have much grass and the ants have taken over the yard. It is so bad that every time I step out in the yard to do anything, I am pretty much guaranteed to step in a small ant hill that I don't see.

Since I live near the NC/SC boarder, I wasn't able to seed until this fall. I have taken steps to improve the lawn and hopefully that will help, along with other actions, eliminate my ant problem.

Is there anything I can spray or spread on my lawn that will kill the ants? I used a granular spread a few months ago without any success. The only thing that seems to somewhat work is the white powder stuff but that only kills the hill and another one pops up the next day. I also have dogs and small kids so using anything that won't be pet/kid safe in half of a day is going to be tough.
