If it was mixed properly (Lime putty, sand and gauging) which isn't exactly apparent from your post, you may or may not have problems where it does not meet the recommended thickness. The possibility exists on the thin areas that it will evaporate dry without curing. Water is needed for the lime to cure, and when the water evaporates quickly (more likely in a too-thin application) the plaster reverts to a powder state instead of setting up hard. You'll know in a day. If you can powder off spots with rubbing, you need to apply it thicker. If the problems spots are quite small in size, you could wait until after priming, then, treat as a drywall repair, with regular mud. Casey

"I don't think you can get a nice finish coat directly on top of the bonding agent. At least I had a difficult time, although perhaps a pro would know how. For me, everything slid around too much while you were trying to work it smooth." Sounds like you are not leaving enough material on the wall, possibly using too much water in the mix, and did not allow the bonding agent to dry enough. The layer is about 1/16 to 1.8 inch thick. The mix for skim coating should be about like peanut butter in consistency. This allows it to be pushed out easily but has enough body to be workable. Bonding agents need to set up to tacky before applying the plaster. The water in the plaster will help it soften again and grab. Use of drywall knives also makes covering large areas even more of a chore than it needs to be. A plasterer's trowel makes short work of covering large areas and produces a smooth finish. It takes some practice to barealy raise the leading edge to obtain a good finish. The trowels with the tiny (3/4 inch diameter) handle are not as good as ones with a decent (~1.5 inch) grip diameter.

We did veneer plaster for a couple of reasons. In our regional area, no one does it. We had to go to a specialty supplier and order it in. We found someone who trained in Maine to install it and the only reason it was a bit more expensive than drywall is because our original framing was uneven and we ordered 5/8" thick sheets. I had a pretty strong aversion to drywall after the adventures with mold. Veener plaster is freakin' gorgeous, perfectly smooth and we would do it again in a heartbeat. The feel of it perfectly matches the rest of the house - which is all 1920's plaster. Here, people call the supposedly water resistant drywall "blueboard", so I was surprised by what it looked like (gray, gray and more gray) and that it was made up of two slightly different layers and that it is much harder and denser than drywall. It works pretty well as a sound deadener too! @casey Wow, that is really nice!

Enjoyed the pics - they remind me of my own house - rough, but really not too far gone - and same era (have similar arches). I had so much fun taking off all the old wall paper, paneling and gack - so satisfying to see all the layers of history, different colors of paint and in fact - I still am reluctant to paint over a couple of rooms where I took off all the layers down to the original calcimine paint (which is in shades of browns and golds.) Btw the chalky paint is calcimine and you should wash off what you can with tsp substitute and then use a certain type of primer, the name of which Ive forgotten .... its by Zinsser, and its about the only one that will adhere to calcimine. If you don't your paint will peel off. Sanding- I would not sand the trim esp if it might be lead - if its really rough and gloppy looking, just bite the bullet and remove it somehow esp.the parts around where the window sashes go up and down, to allow them free and easy movement - even if you're going to paint, you still want all that glop out of there for a smooth surface. Theres entire books written about restoring windows - all kinds of internet info as well. Peel paint from glass with razorblade. Big areas with fallen plaster - cut drywall patches same thickness as the plaster or slightly thinner and attach to the wood lath and plaster over - using bonding agent to adhere new plaster to old and drywall to new plaster. As for order and determining priorities - Im not a good one to ask. I tend to circle around too much and have too many things unfinished at once!
