Necessary to prime old plaster walls prior to repair/skim coat?

Just how necessary is it to prim original plaster walls before repairing some cracks and smoothing out the texture with plaster?

I'm under the impression that it is required so the plaster will stick to the wall: The primer helps create an even surface, and the orignal plaster is less than ideal because of all the residue from calcimine paint, wallpaper and whatnot (I have scrubbed the calcimine paint off best to my ability).

I ask because I am curious what would happen if we did NOT prime before plastering. Would it flake off? Look bad? Be bad for the plaster walls somehow, like they would be probe to moisture?

I'm new to this. Thank you!
