Xpost in Baths, Can I Skim Coat New Bathroom Drywall and Plaster?
Comments (2)Thanks Casey, What is a good oil based primer. I will be using BM paints for the room. I could get their primer. I have only used Zinzer primers up to this point, in my kitchen, and now bathroom. My progress: Last night I went ahead and thinned down some green topped joint compound (drying type, I believe it is called, as opposed to setting type) and rolled it over the Gardz primed walls. After I knifed it off you could barely see the application, just a soft haze. My thought is that I will now apply another thin skim, then when dried, prime for painting. I just don't want these layers to delaminate in the bathroom. This isn't a steamy room because there is no shower and the tub is rarely used. But it is a bathroom none the less....See MoreNecessary to prime old plaster walls prior to repair/skim coat?
Comments (2)I would do the repairs /hole patches prior to priming - but lathe and plaster surfaces must be washed & scrubbed clean and free of loose debris, and you should use a bonding agent made to adhere new plaster to old. (I like pro-bond which is sold as a concrete bonder but says in tiny print can be used on plaster). Someone else can speak to the skim coat question - are you proposing to cover entire wall or just uneven areas? If the latter, then I would just paint on bonding agent + finish plaster to level out - and then prime entire surface - Gardz for "problem surfaces" like calcimine, wall paper - although with wallpaper and paste if its the old wheat paste that stuff comes off easily with hot water and a scrub brush - really should get off anyting loose thats easy to take off. Hope yer enjoying the journey - it can be long and tiring but the destination is worth it!...See MoreSkim coat plaster vs. tape and mud
Comments (9)rwiegand thank you for the response. I would be fine with blueboard and plaster with a completely smooth finish. However, I am not fine with the $30K quoted premium. I guess I am posting this question to get a feel if first is this normal for the cost to be this much more and second if this is a premium and preferred finish over the smooth drywall tape and mud walls. I have only had the smooth drywall finish in the previous home I built 20 yrs. ago....See MoreWallpaper over plaster, then poorly skim coated, what do we do
Comments (12)"We thought the historical society would know what they were doing." They know what they are doing,so does anyone that has bought or sold a piece of real estate. They are "putting the screws to you". The evidence point's to you being the one who doesn't know what they are doing. If you don't have a realtor repersenting you in this deal,I reccomend you stop worrying about wallpaper and get one right away....See MoreChristopher Nelson Wallcovering and Painting
