St Louis lawn weed identification (#1)
Comments (12)What kind of grass are you trying to grow? If it is zoysia or fescue then you can kill bermuda off in a zoysia or fescue lawn. The issue is it can be very expensive and 3+ treatments a year. Also, the herbicides mixed to do this, I am not sure if they are approved for residential lawns yet. The link might be a good read if you are going for one of the above lawns. Here is a link that might be useful: Bermuda in Zoysia...See MoreUse of a lawn roller for weed control (pic)
Comments (2)Thank you Diann, I think you'll be surprised by how nice the roller "treatment" makes the mulch look. If you pile on 3" of mulch...(shredded hardwood is my favorite) and run over it with the roller a few times it naturally compacts the mulch and takes all the fluffiness out. I go through a lot of mulch and I know that many weeds will grow right thru that mulch...or on top. The smallest amount of light invites them. It may be premature for me to proclaim that compressing the mulch with the roller will keep the weeds from growing there, but so far I'm optimistic. I'll report back on this later next summer....See MoreNeed help with lawn renovation in Phoenix AZ
Comments (13)Ignore my seed suggestions and listen to TW. The 700 sqft lawn has too much shade for bermuda. You might send a soil test to Logan Labs and post it back here to see what morph has to say about the soil chemistry. TW's comment on salt has me concerned. I've seen St Aug growing from the sand dunes out into the sea, so I'm not too concerned about that, but I'm wondering what salt there is in PHO. You would be better off waiting for the old grass to revive than to seed with new. Established roots work better and faster than new roots. As I usually mention to people who are impatient with their bermuda coming out of dormancy...give it time and you'll be laughing that you ever suspected there was a problem. Now with the shade, you do have a problem. Your steps need comment: Kill everything with roundup. This is fine. Wait 2 weeks, then mow to lowest setting. Oops! Don't wait 2 weeks. Water the area daily to try and sprout all the weed seeds you can. Then spray with RU again a week later. Rake up all the debris. This is good Aerate the soil with rental from homedepot. No need for this step. If you have hard soil, then use shampoo on it. Spread the bermda seed, and add top soil. YIKES! No. Scatter the seed and roll it down with a rented water fillable roller. For really small areas, just walk on all the seed to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Don't add topsoil unless you are trying to raise a low spot on the yard. Adding topsoil WILL change your drainage. There's another recent post on this forum where the guy has a broken house from water backing up into his garage and then freezing between the bricks. His pictures indicate too much top dressing caused the water to not drain into the yard but instead back up to the buildings....See MoreLawn renovation/reseeding - Phoenix AZ
Comments (2)The best solution for weed control is a healthy lawn. Lush, thick Bermuda grass will choke out most weeds and along with Bermuda hybrids, it is the best choice for a lawn in the Phoenix area. It will stay green until the first freeze (usually about Dec. 1) and begin greening up in March if not overseeded. There are two classes of weeds - grasses and broadleaf (clover, spurge, London rocket, etc.). If you have broadleaf weeds, use a product containing 2-4-D which will not harm the Bermuda. Your Spectracide does not kill Bermuda but is effective on a wide range of broadleaf weeds. It also comes with a warning not apply to Bermudagrass when daytime temperatures exceed 85° F. The poa annua will be dying as soon as warmer weather arrives, if its not dead already. Using Round Up now may not kill the existing bermuda. The active ingredient (glyphosate) needs to be translocated to the underground rhizomes and roots as well as the stolons, and it won't do this until the grass is actively growing when its hot - May - September. To reseed your lawn, wait until mid May when night time temperatures are consistently above 65 degrees to seed more Bermuda. Here's a link to the steps on seeding a Bermuda lawn. FYI, The seeded variety 'Princess' is a seed producing hybrid variety. It is legally termed a hybrid, due to the arrangement and selection of seed producing parent plants in production fields. 'Princess' produces a lawn which looks much finer then most other seeded types of Bermuda plants and is darker green in color....See Moredchall_san_antonio
