Paul Beatty (US) - The Sellout (Oneworld)

Deborah Levy (UK) - Hot Milk (Hamish Hamilton)

Graeme Macrae Burnet (UK) - His Bloody Project (Contraband)

Ottessa Moshfegh (US) – Eileen (Jonathan Cape)

David Szalay (Canada-UK) - All That Man Is (Jonathan Cape)

Madeleine Thien (Canada) - Do Not Say We Have Nothing (Granta Books)

So, I've read Hot Milk - I know I said I wasn't going to, but for some reason I picked it up and read it. It's a fascinating read - but a bit weird. Not quite sure about it. It's the story of a mother and daughter (first person, from the daughter's point of view); the mother can't walk for some mysterious reason, and they have come to Spain to see a doctor (who may or may not be a quack) to try to fix her, and the daughter has an affair with a guy who works on the beach, and also with a woman who does embroidery, and also takes time off to go to Greece to visit her father who walked out on them several years ago....I have no idea what on earth the point of it all is, but I am not surprised that it was shortlisted. It's the sort of book that gives the Booker it's reputation for obscurity. Hope it doesn't win...

I read and loved His Bloody Project and All That Man Is, as I said earlier.

I abandoned Do Not Say We Have Nothing, but now it's been shortlisted, I'll give it another go later on. I've just started The Sellout.
