Can Mgmt. Dictate Who Provides Internet Service?
Comments (5)I have AT&T/SBC and my fax machine does not function with their phone/TV/DSL package. Not sure why, but it's a known issue. I had to turn off the voicemail feature in order to be able to auto send and receive faxes. Otherwise I'd have to stand there and go through several steps to manually receive a fax, including knowing when it was coming in and being at the machine waiting for it. I have just a small home office, for a larger busier office that would really interfere with their day to day activities. So maybe they were experiencing similar issues. Also, there are cables coming into our house. They hook up to a main gateway for the internet and primary PC is hooked up to that. Any secondary PCs or laptops are on a wireless network. A complex would probably have to have wiring/cables coming in at some location, then perhaps each unit could be part of a wireless network (much like hotels or hospitals now offer). So I don't see how you'd be able to just luck out and get SBC service without those cables coming into the building somewhere. I had to consult our atty once about a satellite dish issue. Installed on a rental house roof without asking, it was a poor install job & created issues with the roof. Our atty said under FCC regulations as a LL I cannot prohibit the use of a satellite dish (because it would be illegal for me to prohibit others from access to various forms of that type communication, such as TV, radio, internet, etc.) However I can stipulate that it's not to be installed on any of our buildings. So in that situation installation on a pole or fence post is acceptable, but not on any roof or building in order to prevent structural damage from poor installation. My point is even tho I was advised LLs can't block communication services like TV, Internet or radio, LL's can put restrictions on installation if it compromises structural integrity. So in your scenario it might well be they can't block internet altogether (and they aren't), but they can prevent use of a provider that impedes the daily & necessary functions of their office. It would take an attorney to elaborate more on that....See MoreCan someone help me find a fast internet service?
Comments (16)I've been working from home for 3 years now using DSL. First at 1536/365, then 3072/768, and now 6172/768. I could probably get 12 mbps if I wanted it, but my margins would be quite a bit thinner and I really don't want to spend more. I didn't really need the faster speeds, I just took advantage of them when a better deal came along. The same speed from Time Warner Cable would be about $15-20 more a month, which is why I chose the DSL. If $ wasn't a factor, I probably would've gone with cable. DSL is a little bit more of a pain to troubleshoot when things go wrong, whereas cable is a bit more like set-it-and-forget-it. Fortunately, I've had very few service interruptions with my telco provider (Windstream). I plan to continue with them unless they give me a reason to leave....See MoreDSL or Cable Internet Service?
Comments (12)I had DSL briefly back in Fall '08 and upgraded to cable when a great deal from our local cable company (Allentown, Pa. area) came along. Oddly, ever since I moved the DSL to my relative's house across the street, she started having occasional issues with a temperamental modem. My cable service, though, has been working fine. 5 meg download vs. 1 meg for DSL. And the total price (TV, phone, internet) of the Triple Bundle we now have with our cable co. is about $1 more per month than we were paying previously for TV (cable company), Verizon phone and dial-up internet ! Not sure how it would compare to the Verizon TV/Phone/DSL bundle, but I imagine the prices are fairly identical. (The only draw-back for us is that the phone goes out when the cable does, so it's good we have cell phones for those situations -- which haven't happened yet.)...See MoreThe price of High Speed Internet Service!
Comments (15)Hi again mush, I've used both Yahoo! and gmail for email - both very useful - and free. Son was just checking what options may be available for me rather than dial-up - heck, I'm 82: time's getting shorter. I haven't got time to twiddle my thumbs waiting for dial-up to load! It seems that at about 20 km. from the city, 13 from a village, and about 5 from a switch, I think, I'm too far out to get high-speed service over wire. So we were told the other day when he went searching for an ISP on www.canadaisp.com? ca? I think was the address: got at least a couple of dozen potential providers. Our rural municipality has arranged for increased speed for much of the area via 15 towers, one of them about 12 miles away, but it needs line-of-sight ... and that would require more or less going through old uncle's barn ... or putting an antenna on its roof, or on the silo. We're going to see whether I might be able to do that, and send signal over the air to the house, about 300 feet away. There's another tower in another county that may be closer, but I haven't been able to find from a neighbour using it how the system works through that. Another guy who lives near me gets a signal from a nearby grain elevator, operated by a telephone company, that gives him fast download of print and small graphics, but not of material in motion and some of the included ads have that, so if one has limited download capacity, it might get eaten up more quickly than one expected, were one not able to get rid of them. ole joyful...See MoreElmer J Fudd
