PeoplePC internet service--any good?

I'm trying to find an ISP for my parents, and it looks like PeoplePC are the only ones in a price range they consider acceptable. The problem is that they're just far enough outside of their town, which is out in the boonies, that they can't get cable, can't get dsl, nothing. But they can access PeoplePC.

So I thought I'd do some research and ask here if anyone has used PeoplePC as an internet service provder. (I also posted over at the Kitchen Table.) Good/bad experience? We're not planning to use their software (I've heard rumors it comes bundled with spyware); instead we're thinking of Zone Alarm's internet suite w/firewall and virus protection. Any comments would be appreciated!!!

People PC has a 30 day trial version. I tried this and you
just about have to start a fight to cancel out after the
try out is about to end. Their still sending me CD's trying
to get me back. I made the mistake of letting them talk me
into giving a credit card number. Your not suppose to have to
do that for the trial version I think. Their email is not much
good, you would need to use something like Gmail or outlook.
I have AOL and they have a good way of saving on AOL.
I pay $14.95 for full service, dial-up and their Favorites
savings location is much better than Firefox.

I had DSL briefly back in Fall '08 and upgraded to cable when a great deal from our local cable company (Allentown, Pa. area) came along. Oddly, ever since I moved the DSL to my relative's house across the street, she started having occasional issues with a temperamental modem. My cable service, though, has been working fine. 5 meg download vs. 1 meg for DSL. And the total price (TV, phone, internet) of the Triple Bundle we now have with our cable co. is about $1 more per month than we were paying previously for TV (cable company), Verizon phone and dial-up internet ! Not sure how it would compare to the Verizon TV/Phone/DSL bundle, but I imagine the prices are fairly identical. (The only draw-back for us is that the phone goes out when the cable does, so it's good we have cell phones for those situations -- which haven't happened yet.)

I'll try to answer several of your questions. Yes, you will need a special router, but I would NOT buy the one the salesman is pushing on you. I have one made by Cradlepoint (the CTR350) which I bought at Amazon.com and did not pay nearly that much for it. It is very small and I plug the wireless "card" (modem) into a USB port on the router. Then I connect my desktop computer via Ethernet (cat 5 cable). I connect my laptop via the wireless signal sent from the router. It is very easy to set up the security on the router. In addition, I also use software firewalls on my computers. The built-in wireless in the laptop is not the same thing as what you plug in. It allows the laptop to receive and use wireless signals, and all new laptops come with this. Now whether this would be faster than your DSL is questionable. Sometimes my service with Verizon is quite fast, but at busy times, mostly evenings, it slows down quite a bit. With DSL you have a dedicated line, so your speed should remain constant. I went this route, because I cannot get DSL or cable, and I suffered over 2 years with satellite. Then Verizon's 3-G (EVDO) became available to me. You need to be fairly close to a tower to get a good, strong signal also. If your cell phone service is good, chances are the wireless Internet would be good, also. I was able to buy a used "card", which is really a modem, so that I was not locked into a contract and I can end the service at any time without penalty. So it's your call. If you are unhappy with your DSL, you might give it a try. Do they have a trial period during which you can return anything and only owe for the usage you had? If not. . . . .It's your call.

Rachelh, I know that it *does* depend on where you live. I'm in an urban area just outside Boston, and the cable almost never goes out. I can't remember the last time I had an issue with cable service. Many of my neighbors and friends use VoiP phones, and I never hear anyone complain that they lost service. I'm sure it happens somewhere around here, I've just been lucky. It's definitely a case of how risk-tolerant you are. I agree that the most risk-free course is to stick with a wired land line, but I'm not willing to pay $30 a month (for the cheapest phone service I could find, plus taxes and other charges) as insurance for the chance that both cable and cell phones will be out at the same time that I have an emergency. That insurance might be worth $5-$10 to me, at most. Even at that, I probably wouldn't buy it.:)

Scott, I just took a look at the website for the dealership where I bought my car. The dealership has two Fleet Managers. The one who sold me my car in 2013 is still there, as is the other one who was there at the time. The General Manager and two Sales Managers are the same. The Service Department Manager has changed, but many of the Service Consultants are the same. I don't know where you get your car serviced, but one thing you could do is find a service consultant who has been there for a while, and talk to him/her to find out which sales person they would recommend. The service consultant that I deal with when I take my car in has been there since 1989, and I trust him. Of course, I don't expect to ever buy another car. If I did, I'd want to upgrade the model that I currently have, and the model I'd go to starts at over $72,000 so I think I'll just hang with what I've got. :-) I think it is best to NOT mention trading in your current car when negotiating a price for a new(er) car. A dealer will NEVER give you the best deal on a trade-in because they will have to detail the car and sell it at a profit so they will always low-ball you. You're better off doing a private sale. But, if you really must trade-in the car to save some money on the new car, negotiate the price on the new car first, then ask how much they'll give you for your trade-in. Do you have Microsoft Excel? I ask because before I bought my car I created a spreadsheet that I used to see what the differences would be for financing different amounts at different percentage rates. I've plugged in new numbers for you -- taking wild guesses because I don't know how much you would spend or what percentage rate you would get on a loan. But, this shows two different amounts financed -- $35,000 and $20,000, both with the same three different loan rates -- 1.9%, 4%, and 10%. All are amortized over a 5-year period. You could do something like this in advance of your negotiations, to have a better idea of what different monthly payments would do to your loan. Creating the spreadsheet is really easy. In column A, write exactly what I've got. In column B, you enter formulas on lines 7 through 12. If you're familiar with Excel, you will know that you can then just do a copy/paste of the column B formulas to as many more columns as you think you'll need. Or, you can manually enter the formulas in each column, making sure to change the column designation to the correct one for each column. The formulas for column B are (and I will indicate the appropriate line number first): 7 =PMT((B4/12),B8,-B3) 8 =B5*12 9 =SUM(B7*12) 10 =SUM(B3) 11 =SUM(B12-B10) 12 =B9*B5 (The line numbers are bolded, and all of the formulas begin with the "equal" symbol. This forum doesn't allow showing more than one "space." There are NO spaces in the formulas.) So, you can't just plug in a new monthly payment amount if the salesman says "ok, let's say we make your payment $25 per month." You'd need to mess with the amount financed, and/or annual interest rate, and/or duration of loan. The monthly payment amount shows up automatically as a result of the formula based on the amounts entered on lines 3, 4, and 5. But if you've messed around with the spreadsheet before you go to the dealership, you'll have a good idea what the different monthly payment amounts will represent.

You can get AOL for them FREE now. Family went to Free AOL but I kept the $4.95 a month plan. I get full service and dial-up if I should need it.

There are a number of other good low cost ISPs also. Do a search on Google for low cost ISPs and you should find any number who serve the area where your parents live. Prices range from $4.95 to $9.99 a month. I'd personally stay away from People PC.

I had a couple of long distance friends with people's pc. They both often used customer support. Worked for them.

But if you dont need any customer support just buy the cheapest dialup you can find. The nationwide dialup isp's pretty much use the same wholesale modem pool connections. So as long as they pay their bills.. your connection works.

hmmm...many things to consider, especially if your parents aren't really computer savvy, and may have problems.

Is customer support 'free' or a charge by the minute?...don't like that.
Is there a year contract?...don't like that
Is a credit card required to even 'try' one for free?...don't like that
Do they require ebilling?...paying on line?...don't like that.
Do they require having their cd for installation...don't like that...having to waste time going and getting one, or waiting for one in the mail.
Do they have an accellerator? Do they charge additional for it?..don't like that.

I've had and liked twncorp for years. It has been reliable.

Mine is 14.95 I might add, but it has all that I want and need in an ISP

And I might add...quick customer support...not a long time on hold like with some of the big boys.

My dial up service (allvantage) sold out to peoplepc a couple months ago. Because the transfer was done by allvantage, thought I would try it out. I kept it exactly 3 days. I hated it. I am now using Copper.net which I like a lot and its about same price as peoplepc. I have also heard an isp called toast.net recommended as being a very good choice. Both have dial up numbers in most areas. Good Luck to you.

There's a lot of low-cost ISPs around. I've known a couple people who used PeoplePC and were satisfied but left for broadband. I think they're a bit "spendy" even, since I'm paying less than $5/mo. Let's face facts folks, this myth about "tech support" on anything is mostly a myth. I get free email support. Basically all most anyone would need. Otherwise you'll pay more, either pay $10/mo more and get it "free" or pay by the minute.

Once set up, what more will you need? Even the "free" tech support will NOT teach you how to search for the best price on hemmorhoid creams or the like, nor will they solve your computer problems for you. It's limited, very limited. Most of the info you need will be on a website anyway and like I said, once you're going, what more will you need?

Be sure to look at features and needs. Number of hours vary. Most will have an email account but not all. Personally I think you're better off using something like Yahoo or Gmail since you're not reliant upon the ISP if you decide to change. More reasons but I won't go into them now.

BTW, IMO the "accellerator" programs are worthless and surely not worth paying for.

Oh, and FYI, most all of the ISPs use many of the same modem pools for access. So frankly, paying AOL's ridiculous charges get you nothing more than a $4/mo ISP as far as internet access. (Although they have some of their own sites you can go to, whoopie-ding, never interested me).

I would give a caution though. I'm amazed when I see people afraid to give a CC # to get a service, yet will give them direct access to their bank accounts! At least you have some control with the CC. And you also need to understand that for the low-buck outfits to make it, they can't be bothered chasing people for payment. That's why they require the CC payment. Even writing a check requires someone to process it which costs money.
