Please help! We're getting a buzz--LED dimmer questions
Comments (10)Thanks, lazy_gardens and kirkhall. The lights are all snugly installed. We did call Lutron and Cree after I posted this morning. (Thanks for the suggestion, laz_gardens.) According to Lutron, they test for compatibility, and unless they hear a significant hum or see flickering, they think that things are ok, and stated that LED's humming is a natural byproduct of the electricity cycling 120 times per second. DH didn't ask Cree about the humming (I'm not sure why...), but he did ask them about their chart, and they said that if we noticed flickering or humming, then decrease the number of lights on the circuit until we no longer notice those characteristics occurring. DH was more concerned about whether running 12 lights on the circuit could cause premature failure of the lights or the switches, which he was told is not a concern since the switches are labeled capable of handling 150w of LED lighting. Our 12 lights fall in that range. That's very interesting that some of your lights hummed and some didn't, Kirkhall. Are they the same brand we bought? DH can't hear the hum (he has some hearing loss and doesn't pick up on noises outside of his hearing range). I haven't climbed the ladder to check them up close. I could try that and see if I can figure out which ones are creating the sound. The noise is subtle, and when the household is active I don't pick up on it as much. The sound reminds me of the hum of fluorescent lights in a classroom....See MoreCan we talk about built ins?
Comments (12)If it was my house I would begin by dropping a soffit and wall from the ceiling to create a "niche" on either side of the fireplace, and create the opportunity for a true "built-in" cabinet of one design or another Finally, even though the space to the right of the fireplace is much smaller than the one to the left, I would definitely place something there so that the space doesn't appear to simply be overlooked or forgotten Yes, these two statements definitely help -- thanks. I looked at a bunch more pictures, and I understand what you're saying about making this area look actually "built in" ... and while not so many people seem to do this, I do like it better. Bpath, I appreciate the pictures, but after staring at them for a bit, I think that's too much stone for me; I think we're not seeing eye to eye on the idea of stone as an accent vs. a major player. Oddly enough, though I'd usually say, "Contemporary? That's nice in other people's houses, but I wouldn't want to look at it every day" ... but I do like that picture. The pictures you have posted show a symmetrical fireplace elevation centered under a symmetrical vaulted ceiling. But the floor plan shows an asymmetrical layout, asymmetrical fireplace elevation, and something that suggests high windows set into a shed dormer-- It's hard to tell. Yeah, I noticed that, but few online images are asymmetrical! I like examples, but they seem to be few and far between. i would make the built ins in the gr and kitchen match however i do have "mismatched" cabinetry in the bathrooms the the sinks are placed in cabinets are stained and the other cabinetry is white The difference, of course, is that you can't see the bathrooms at the same time -- but you can see the kitchen and great room at the same time. Thanks for your continued thoughts, all....See MoreLED lights and Dimmers: Cafe Induction Range and LED Light Buzz
Comments (5)Funny, I just went through the buzzing problem with Leviton. I have very acute hearing and could hear the buzzing when the GE under cabinet lights were on even though the electrician couldn't, but he could hear it when he put his ear up to the dimmer. I bought a few Soraa bulbs to try and the buzzing was ridiculously loud with the Leviton (fortunately was able to return the bulbs), too. Anyway, finally got around to changing the dimmers out, and the Lutron Divas didn't eliminate the buzzing, I ended up with Legrand Radiant, which do cause the very faintest of buzzing but I can't hear it unless the lights are dimmed all the way down, so a non-issue because I'm not in there if the lights are dimmed. They didn't make the bulbs in the overhead cans buzz either. It's frustrating because what dimmer may work with one electrical component may not work with another....See MoreCan we talk about my kitchen -Update 2/15 I have a clear vision now!
Comments (30)Called the cabinet person today to start the ball rolling. Backstory is I live in the quintessential 'tiny town' and of course the one place that sells cabinets in a 40 mile radius the kitchen person not only worked with the former owners(who didnt ultimately choose her plan), but the kitchen they ripped out was also designed by her because our house belonged to her mother-in-law at one time. Gotta love small towns :) :) Now she and I need to find a mutually agreeable time to meet, oh and she lives 'down the road a piece' from me. I do actually know her and her husband, but at first on our call she didnt connect my name. When she asked for the address, I said, "Next door to Josie(AKA the MIL) and she said "OOOOHHH, the old farmhouse." I really had a design epiphany. I was totally uninspired by the idea of adding some painted cabinetry. Then I thought about mixing dark stained tones with light stained tones, did some googling for inspiration and my heart started singing. Finally! This kitchen has really been bugging me since we moved in. I still havent really decided on the 18 or 24" DW but either way I will replace the sink cab. Minimally, I will replace the sink cabinet, the pantry cabinet, the back of the island with panels to match the new cabinetry. I think I need to incorporate the new cabinetry in a couple of places to make the design cohesive and not jibberjabber. Maximally, I would replace whole island but that seems so unnecessary. More excitement, I have always wanted a plate rack and I am getting one! Here are some mockups I threw together....See Morepractigal
