Labor Day Planting Weekend
Comments (26)Did a big variety of planting today because just got tomatoes to set on my first two buckets a couple of days ago! Was gone for a month to UP michigan looking for cooler weather. The 2 buckets were on automatic watering in Al's mix with a few minor differences. Had a neighbor taking care of 3 clay pots with my next set of tomatoes, she did a good job with them and I promptly lost them in 5 gal buckets with Al's mix, man when it is hot and dry, you can not leave them from morning till night or they are goner's. Hope your's came through OK Tom! Have my next stage of tomatoes coming along, 1/2 in 8" clay pots and 1/2 still in the 3oz cups. Cleaned my 2 raised beds today and put seeds in my original column concrete block containers. Used lot's of worm castings as I had a good batch when I got home from North. Silia, I have a black jungle butterbean that is growing very large, blooms, but not setting any beans. Is that normal? Tom, how is your FIL's garden coming. He always gets good produce before I can. My mango crop was "zilch" this summer, weird weather. Folks closer to the coast had a bumper crop this year. bernie...See MoreLabor day weekend pics
Comments (16)Thanks a lot for commenting everyone! Knotz, Im glad that I could help! Definitely post if your successful with all your palms and your banana! Us marine, I really cant wait until the coconut palms get a little older! The fronds are finally splitting so next year it should hopefully start looking more mature soon! Its been a fast grower for me so far and hopefully it wont have the scale problem that it had last winter indoors! It was almost a gonner! Chicago palm, I keep all of the plants inside the house during the winter. There is one room that isnt used much and gets a lot of light so a lot of them might be going in there. All of the semi-hardy plants are going in the unheated garage where they wont see freezing temps, but they wont see any warmth, or too much light either. The rest goes into pretty much any bright corner where they look decent. Ncpalm, I think Im going to end up protecting the oleander the same way I protect the palms: x-mas lights, a frost cloth over that, and then a plastic garbage bin. Eventually as it gets bigger Im going to have to change up the protection a little bit but it should work well for this winter, and maybe next winter too. If you have a broken and old plastic garbage bin than this method is really great because then your making use of it and you dont have to go buy a new one! But when the Oleander gets a little older, I plan on either pruning it down to a smaller size to fit in a small structure, or wrapping it up and then adding some x-mas lights and a frost cloth with something (such as plastic) to keep moisture from going in. And I would mulch around the roots as well. But I havent used that method yet so Im not sure if it would work, just an idea for when it gets a little older! Thanks for looking everyone! -Alex...See Morecats make a trip for Labor Day weekend
Comments (7)cheryl - the friends still seems to be treating us as they were before - same for the cats. stirfryi - I guess I do kind of take for granted that they aren't scaredy cats. One of my previous cats was more of a hider - these two are pretty outgoing....See MoreStaging before or after calling realtor?
Comments (11)My main issue was that I've been "down" for close to 3 years between back problems, caring for my dad, then back problems again. While my house wasn't messy, it bothered me because I'm a neat / organization freak. I collect dolls & other things so I had a lot of packing up to do. We had a few jobs that needed to be done, took longer than we thought due to the contractor, but the realtor we called was able to see past this and is standing by waiting. As for staging, I used this as an opportunity (excuse) to go shopping for new bedding in one room, curtains in 2 others plus a nicer table cloth then what I normally have due to my daughter spilling. I've also wanted to hang some pictures on the walls, found great deals at JC Penney. I'm also trying to finish a few crafting projects like beading a lamp. I'm not going to rent anything to stage, just making sure the house is pleasing to the eye....See MoreNewEnglandgal
