Help- DH's Vista PC can't connect on newly-secured network
Comments (52)Thanks, Raven. I'm sure he's behind on lots of stuff. Early in 2009, I had him change his update settings to notify him of updates, but not automatically download. That was to hold off on sp1 (at a time when I think I read here that folks were having trouble with it - but I didn't follow that topic, so didn't realize sp1 had become a good idea and that sp2 followed). We also set it that way bc. his computer was automatically updating and then rebooting when he was in the middle of doing other things. So this was to allow him to time his own downloads and installations. But he just never thought of it - and I didn't think I needed to keep track for him. I do keep track of his Avast, superantispyware, malwarebyte and spywareblaster. Every now and then when he's done surfing I have him leave out the laptop and go ahead and update and scan. I'll have to keep track of more than that, obviously. I got foxit reader on my ancient laptop in my office and love it. It takes so little room and does what I need quickly. Do you like pdf-xchange viewer more than foxit reader? Or does he need to use firefox to use foxit reader? I installed firefox for him - and set up tabs with the places he likes to go (did that in the summer) - but he hasn't used it. He's a bit resistant to tech changes. He balked when I got Tivo's - although he loves it now. He's a musician - and I got him Protools so he could record the music he wrote. That was over 1 1/2 years ago - and he hasn't learned it yet - he's barely scratched the surface. Last spring he bought an Imac bc. it was better for recording music. And now he's finally setting up his den and equipment. I'm hoping he'll actually learn the software this year. I'll take care of the rest for him so the only learning curve he has is Protools (certainly the most challenging of them all). But I digress. I'll check his other updates and run Secunia - I'm pretty sure I already put that on his computer last year. Thanks. Lynn....See MoreFirefox won't display web graphics (just text) - then BSOD
Comments (11)Hi Zep, Here's the information from the Whocrashed report. System Information (local) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- computer name: LYNNDELL windows version: Windows XP Service Pack 3, 5.1, build: 2600 windows dir: C:\WINDOWS Hardware: Inspiron 530, Dell Inc., 0FM586 CPU: GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Intel586, level: 6 4 logical processors, active mask: 15 RAM: 2950799360 total VM: 2147352576, free: 2022486016 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crash Dump Analysis -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crash dump directory: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump Crash dumps are enabled on your computer. On Tue 6/10/2014 9:46:41 PM GMT your computer crashed crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini061014-01.dmp This was probably caused by the following module: win32k.sys (win32k+0x5FC9E) Bugcheck code: 0x1000008E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFFFFFBF85FC9E, 0xFFFFFFFFADB9BAE4, 0x0) Error: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32k.sys product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System company: Microsoft Corporation description: Multi-User Win32 Driver Bug check description: This indicates that a kernel-mode program generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Conclusion -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One crash dump has been found and analyzed. No offending third party drivers have been found. Connsider using WhoCrashed Professional which offers more detailed analysis using symbol resolution. Also configuring your system to produce a full memory dump may help you. Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information. Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further. ------------------------------------------------------------ I'll try reinstalling Firefox, but I'm doubtful because during the course of today - after my initial Firefox difficulties, I did update from Firefox 29 to Firefox 29.0.1. So I can re-install 29.0.1, but installing it this afternoon did not fix the problem. I'll check back later. And now I'll reinstall. Thank you. Comments (18)It looks like I got the problem resolved. I used REVO to totally remove FF and all references to it, including personal settings. I opened I.E and browsed the web and all worked well. I.E. is using the FIREFOX version of FLASH PLAYER 10______.34 which I manually installed into I.E. and it accepted. I then ran the install for FireFox 5.0 As it was loading it asked me if I wanted to import settings from I.E., I opted YES, I was then asked if I would like to make FF my default, I opted YES. Once done and without making any changes or additional additions or actions of any kind, FF imported everything I had in I.E. I went to several sites I knew Flash Player would be needed and everything worked fine. It appears as I suspected, there was a toggle somewhere in FireFox that got toggled to either TRUE or FALSE. I wish I could have determined which one, to have made this problem go away sooner. If time permits, I may play with them until I can recreate the problem. Thanks much to all of you who responded and were so willing to give up your time and effort to help me....See MorePeople don't want the 'new' Firefox
Comments (9)that is very unusual because one of the big things with firefox 3 was the speed increases in the bench mark tests done for firefox3 it had much higher speeds and much less memory use than earlier versions on all the tests. (which means less bloat and less hogging up of our precious RAM and CPU resources) I read where a few people who saw slow downs later found out it was due to one of their add-ons. Most of the things that are "new" can easily be changed to the older version view like the address bar. Bookmarks can be removed if you go in to your area for organizing bookmarks. There are many security improvements in 3 also, warnings to let you know if you are on a bad website or if there is a phising attempt etc, very helpful to keep you from wandering into a trap. The reason I wait is because I use a lot of firefox add-ons and it takes time for the authors to get them all updated and working for the new version so I give them time to do that then I switch over. But I also read up on all the articles I can find so I know what to expect before I jump in....See More- 7 years ago
