People don't want the 'new' Firefox

On this page a few minutes ago there were, I think, three posts from people indicating they did not want the "new" Firefox.

I am a bit scatter brained but I don't recall reading why they did not want the "new" Firefox. I recall one subjective growl but I don't recall anything specific.

What's the problem?

I don't want it because I'm happy with the one I have installed. It works, and I'm a firm believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! I've read the new one is "bloated" and I don't need bloat. Also, I was scared off because of the way the new AVG turned out. Nothing but trouble with it at work. I know they're not connected, but to me, once bitten, twice shy!

I haven't heard a reason. I've been using it in both my windows and linux boot ups and have had no problem with it. In fact, I've been using it since it was in beta.

ok when you get a pop up from firefox saying it has an update for you it will always tell you what version it is going to be updating you to, for example this latest one that just popped up for me yesterday said it was going to install 2.0.0.16 this is a screen shot of that update notice box as you can see it tells you the version number and also has a link you can click on that tells you more details about this update. To find the current version you have of firefox go to Help at the top then About Firefox. Any big upgrade from like version 2 to version 3 it will not come by auto update you will have to go to the firefox download website and download it from there so you do not have to worry about that.

Hi, I googled, found this forum/article and want to add my two bits. I was also contemplating a fireplace with wood-stove features - back in 1991 when I was planning on the building of my new house. I decided the way to go then was to use the Vermont Casting Winterwarm system. It consisted of a 250 lb sheet metal cabinet that had a standard stick frame/plywood exterior built around it and the accompanying insert unit which added another 400lbs - it was then state of the art. The framing created a chase where 8" double walled steel flue was set with firestops (code concerns), insulation and a complete stainless steel sheet capping off the chase, with the vent pipe popping thru, of course. The framing could have been covered with vinyl siding, keeping costs lower, but we chose to brick it all the way up. So the costs amounted to (in 1991 and 1992) for the foundation- a couple $hundred, framing- a couple $hundred, brickwork - less than $3k not including the stove /fireplace/flues which ran under $5k parts and labor. A fresh air vent with shut off was installed at minimal cost - I did it myself. BTW, the fresh air vent is the key to health and happiness here. It minimizes pressure differences between the house and outside resulting in less backpuffing and a moister atmosphere in the house during the cold seasons. The results were that this baby heats my 3700 sqft house down to 10 degree F. everywhere except the room over the garage. When I have it lit, that is. Now the concerns: Vermont Castings ain't like it use to be. the company got bought out by a publicly traded one and the corporate mindset set in. The product is no longer on my recommendation list. My unit, built in 1991 needed a catalytic replacement after 10 years, the second one lasted only 3! Otherwise, I have sunk in less than a thousand dollars in 15 years on replacement parts. As for you concerns on costs: A conventional masonry fireplace cannot be used in conjuction with an insert. New codes stipulate that the stove has to have heat rated pipes going all the way from stove to the top. You can not use clay liners. My suggestion is to find a high quality insert out there made by a company with a wide distibution base, build a zero-clearance or minimal clearance base/chase according to the manufacturers specs, use double walled or better stainless pipe. You decide what to use on the exterior of the frame and the interior walls. But remember, if you think of adding brick/stone to the looks in the future, overhang at least 4 inches of foundation on the sides for weight handling. Good luck! Andy S.

I post too only when I feel I have something to contribute so please don't feel your posts are being ignored. You are welcome here. And, in defense to some of the long-time Kitchen Forum posters, there are times when you post and think, why bother, because it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. For example, not too long ago, someone asked if anyone had a Moen Extensa faucet and if they did, could they answer a few questions. Having 2 Moen Extensa faucets, I felt qualified to respond and did so. After posting, I continued to monitor the thread just in case the OP came back with additional questions. That was my mistake. The next poster says words to the effect "I looked at Moen Extensa faucets and saw they had a plastic spray button on the top which looked cheap so I went with something else" and then the poster went on to rave about the faucet he/she purchased that cost 3 times as much as a Moen Extensa. I shouldn't sit in judgment of that poster but I can't help but wonder how useful that post was to the OP who may or may not be able to afford a more expensive faucet and was really asking for people with Moen Extensa faucets to discuss their experiences with them. Had the next poster owned a Moen Extensa faucet and said "I really hate the plastic spray button and wish I'd never bought it," I'd have no quarrel with the post. But I would think, if one is considering the purchase of a Moen Extensa faucet, that means one has gotten past "appearance issues" and is interesting in hearing how the faucet performs, so a post of that nature is not only unhelpful, it's rude. If you experience enough situations like that, your zeal for posting diminishes.

Mabelding - The faucet looks good in there! May - Good points. I've always considered a chrome faucet neutral until this moment in time, lol. I'm going to order stainless. I stopped at Lowes today and was looking at the faucets just to see some IRL. I hated all of them. The chrome was blindingly blingy (my faucet doesn't look quite like that) and the stainless looked dull and ugly. They were all obnoxiously huge. Then I took a stroll through the kitchen section and the faucets looks so much different and better IN an actual kitchen. I'm not sure why it made a difference but it really did. Raven - I failed to notice yours was stainless. Thanks for the height info. on your faucet. What's the arm sticking out on the right?

I got rid of it because it was much slower when opening the app, and also always slower in opening pages. There's a noticeable lag or "hang" when using it. Don't know why, but the old one "pops" pages - new one does not.

Secondarily, I didn't like the new drop-down address bar (also slower), but that can supposedly be changed. When I tried to remove some bookmarks (yellow star), some of which didn't have a reason for being there (viewed a long time ago), they couldn't be deleted. Innocuous links, but still an annoyance.

Finally, let me say that I had upgraded to 3.0 more or less the same time I installed the new free AVG 8.0 (several weeks ago). At first I thought it was AVG that was causing all the delays, and I eventually got rid of it since I read that it's new version was bloated also (usess too much memory), and I went with Avast instead.

Anyway, the sluggishness continued and persisted until I got rid of FF 3, going back to 2.x. I'm quite certain FF 3 was the problem.

that is very unusual because one of the big things with firefox 3 was the speed increases in the bench mark tests done for firefox3 it had much higher speeds and much less memory use than earlier versions on all the tests. (which means less bloat and less hogging up of our precious RAM and CPU resources)
I read where a few people who saw slow downs later found out it was due to one of their add-ons.

Most of the things that are "new" can easily be changed to the older version view like the address bar.
Bookmarks can be removed if you go in to your area for organizing bookmarks.
There are many security improvements in 3 also, warnings to let you know if you are on a bad website or if there is a phising attempt etc, very helpful to keep you from wandering into a trap.

The reason I wait is because I use a lot of firefox add-ons and it takes time for the authors to get them all updated and working for the new version so I give them time to do that then I switch over.
But I also read up on all the articles I can find so I know what to expect before I jump in.

Curious about which add-on's you are using. Only add-on's that I have are Ad-Block Plus and Yahoo Photo's Easy Upload Tool (wonder which kid put that on), both of which work fine on 2.x Anyway, regardless of FF 3.x benchmark tests, old is working much better/faster.

you wanted to know the firefox add-ons I use? well I run linux mostly so I have one version of firefox on it which is a bit different than the windows version and some add-ons are not written for linux so some that I use in windows I can not use in linux. But here is my linux list since I am on my linux computer right now and can look at the list.

I use the theme Glowyblue and ad plus. I like both of them. I like to keep things simple.

I use Adblock Plus, Ave Safe Search, Fission, Flashblock, IE Tab, PDF Download.

Hey Raven, post back when you are on your Windows machine. I love Firefox Add-ons.

I upgraded to Fire Fox 3 because my programmable keyboard requires it. Yes FF3 is slow but so was 2.
