Ugly Ranch needs Curb appeal ~ Advice Please!
Comments (4)I think that some fairly inexpensive things could make a dramatic difference. First I would replace the iron columns with some more substantial 6x6 supports (with some moldings perhaps) and add some railings. Also, I would not paint the porch, but stain it. I think taking out the concrete porch would be a very big project. I would also add railings and wider wooden steps to the front door. Paint or replace the front door for pop and in your individual taste. The shutters look out of place and out of scale for the picture window. Shutters should look as if they would actually work, these do not. Once this is done the right of your house would be heavy and you would need to balance this out with a nice curved bed on the left with a fairly large tree to add balance. Zone 5 maybe a nice magnolia. Fill in the large bed around the tree with some nice plantings. Towards the road cries out for a small fence with a gate or maybe some hedges with more beds. A flagstone path up to the front steps. A small tree (maybe a Japanese maple) on the right and curved beds along the walkway and driveway. I think this would take your home from plain to fantastic with the least cost and with things that you can probably do on your own. I am sure you can. I do like the idea of shutters, but think you should look at different sizes and styles. I don't like being critical, however I think that by asking for help you are probably looking for honest evaluation....See MoreNeed advice- ugly house lacks curb appeal
Comments (10)I don't think the windows need shutters. IMHO, it's a very cute house and the cinder-brick screen is a lovely feature to highlight. Start by cleaning the bricks and the exterior. If you avoid painting those it will be a lower-maintenance exterior. Do paint the garage door a color that helps it disappear. If you want to paint the cinder bricks, choose something that highlights them. I like YVs design, it's very low-maintenance....See MoreHelp! Remedy for mismatched sized windows - need curb appeal!
Comments (5)@dahkee1 our current house has very large windows except one over the sink in the kitchen which was made smaller purposefully. People do that-- put in a small window over the sink or in the kitchen to line up with cabinet heights. Your windows look like they are winking! If it bothers you, I would get some a nice planter box and add some greenery/flowers under it. That will give it visual weight and help line it up with the base of the other window. I actually kind of like this little winky window. Your landscaping is lovely-- just trim it up a little and add a cute planter. Comments (8)My question too. This will be a rental? Then for sure focus on hard scaping. You have to assume renters will do no yard work or maintenance so no to a hedge yes to a wall-not a fence but a low maintenance wall. Wooden structures are maintenance xs 10 so no pergolas or decks go for a patio at most. You mentioned 'shared' a lot. What CAN you legally change on the 'shared' spaces? Is that slider a main entrance? I would change that. The light is nice but the view and lack of privacy not so much. Move the door? My guess is the architect found only that spot for a door...don't get yourself into a dominos scenario. You want to up privacy and define spaces, true but some things are what they are....See Morepractigal
