The Old House Windows Design Dilemma

Help! Remedy for mismatched sized windows - need curb appeal!

We're now working on curb appeal for our recently purchased home. Lots of landscaping work needs to be done, but one thing that really bugs me is the mismatched sized windows. This is the first thing on the house one will see when entering the driveway. How do we remedy this left window? We could get a new, larger window put in to match the one on the right, but we're not sure about redoing the kitchen just for a window (it's located above the kitchen sink). Shutters? Trim?

(In another post we'll also address the greenhouse attached to the lower level under the windows, but I'm open to suggestions there too! We do want to keep it.)

I don't see anything off with the two windows of different sizes. Your house is a bit asymmetric to start with if you notice the roof-line.

I would paint all the trim that same color as the siding to minimize the difference.

@dahkee1 our current house has very large windows except one over the sink in the kitchen which was made smaller purposefully. People do that-- put in a small window over the sink or in the kitchen to line up with cabinet heights.

Your windows look like they are winking! If it bothers you, I would get some a nice planter box and add some greenery/flowers under it. That will give it visual weight and help line it up with the base of the other window.

I actually kind of like this little winky window. Your landscaping is lovely-- just trim it up a little and add a cute planter. Done and done.

Thank you ladies : ) but these last images of the house are Jay's vision for his place. Awm, I especially appreciate your acknowledging my input and ideas, as the photoshopping is simply a design and communication tool. I always wonder if anyone notices, or appreciates more than the shopping! The creativity and challenges are where my heart is, aside from loving to help people solve their problems or achieve their vision. And, of course, I want to be good at that, too! We use the front door as an entry, it has a couple planets on it, I rant to decorate it a little bit more with a little bistro set maybe! I am looking for more budget friendly fixes currently since we are hoping for an addition on the back at some point and my husband does not want to put too much into the front, so if i can think of a good fix that's affordable then it's manageable! He is also amazing at diy and reno projects and my brother is a contractor so that helps!

Adorable house. Take the shutters off the front door and dormer window. Leave them off, they don't belong there. Fixing the front porch steps will go a long way. I agree that a knowledgable local nursery can help with foundation plantings. It's hard for us to address the plantings as we don't know where the house is located. Considering the red siding, a navy or black front door would be fun. Benjamin Moore Hale Navy is a great color, and you can never go wrong with black. Be very CAREFUL whenever you do replace the windows. To do them right and period appropriate will not be an inexpensive job. So many people slap on cheap vinyl windows that have nothing to do with the vintage of the home. Nothing bastardizes a house like the wrong cheap vinyl windows. My daughter is replacing her windows in phases so she can do them correctly. Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Enjoy.

While it will shrink your side yard, you might consider planting a couple of rows of cedar trees or other evergreen trees or shrubs )that keep their leaves year round) to create a "green fence" between the railroad track and your home. Not sure it would help with the sound but it certainly wouldn't hurt. After you plant the first row, plant the second row with those trees/shrubs blocking the view of any space between that first row.

I wouldn't change the window because it will then make your roofline look "off". Landscaping (a tall tree on that side of the house) will take your eyes away from the windows.

IMo clear away all the over growth so we can see your house . It is impossible to give advice on curb appeal when the house is not visible. There should be a very clear path to the front door so start there.

I think the windows are in sync with the roof line. If you replace the kitchen window to match the other, I think it will look awkward, too large for the slope of the roof.

You could paint everything one color…a bit of a disguise:
