Getting ready for fall overseed

Hi guys I've been posting in bare lawn with weeds. Now today I've sprayed the lawn with the Bayer Advanced All in one with Crabgrass Killer.

I've been following advice from here:

Watering deeply once a week been hot summer here(Ontario just north of Michigan) mid to upper 90s and higher with humidex.

Used about 15 pounds /1000 feet of alfalfa feed twice this summer. Only used Scotts once at the beginning of summer with weed control.

Sprayed this Bayer at the beginning of summer as well.

The Crabgrass has been pretty bad, but the grass has stayed green with the other things I have done. I still have some bare spots not all the pictures I took show this.

1) So now should I wait three weeks and spread seed to overseed and fill in my bare spots.

2) Also what should I put my spreader on for the overseeding.

3) what about watering about three times per zone for couple weeks for only 10-15 minutes to keep moist

What is the type of grass you have? Did you apply any pre-emergent in spring? From my experience, application of a pre-emergent in early spring is the key to having a crab grass free lawn - Along with other good practices like mulch mowing the lawn at the highest possible setting on your lawn mower, deep and infrequent watering schedule etc. and proper fertilizing with either synthetic or organic fertilizers. The current batch of crab grass that you have can be tackled with a post emergent weed killer like XLR8. Even if you do not apply any weed killer, crab grass being an annual, will die out at the onset of the first frost. However, the seeds that are already formed are deposited in the lawn waiting for the right conditions for germination. This is going to be in next spring/ summer. Timely application of the pre-emergent will prevent them from germinating.

Thanks. I Dis not put a pre emergent this year. I definitely plan on it next spring. I have been mowing high this year, mulching and deep infrequent water as well as fertilizer.

I already sprayed today with Bayer's. I plan on overseeding and spot seeding the bad areas. Plan on doing that in mod September because I just put this stuff down today. Wondering if this is good plan of action. Wonder if I should also overseed in early spring then pre emergent in late spring. Thoughts on this?

Zone 9 seems so far away from me I can't quite wrap my head around what flowers would be easily available this time of the year for you. But basically, rather than worrying about aphids coming back, what you might want to do is contract your aphid control job out. :-) To do that in my garden, I have lots of the types of flowers that attract the beneficials in a perennial bed nearby. And I put pots of annuals at the ends of my veggie rows. So maybe try doing a search on plants that attract ladybugs, etc and stick out some pots of those with your fall veggies. FWIW, I've never done chemicals. I don't even like to use neem, though I'll use Bt and suchlike. I figure it's better for me & my yard (heck, we have a well!) to not use chemicals. It's also lazier, in a way. I would be planting flowers & herbs, anyway. Why not multi-task them? I wouldn't necessarily suggest buying ladybugs. If there's not enough of a food source, they'll just leave. Better to attract them so they'll hang out and be ready to work when you need them.

Whenever I've done overseeding, I had the lawn core aerated first. Much of the seed falls in the holes. These seeds will require much less watering since the water accumulates in the holes, they get wet and they don't dry out very easily. In this case, I rarely watered. Only if we went a week or so without rain. Maybe if we had 4 sunny days of temps in the 80's I would water also.

Here is my to do list: - pull up summer flowers and add to compost pile - amend flower beds - sow some perennial seeds in fall and hope for first year blooms - dig up and store summer bulbs - move and divide some perennials - start slug bait to reduce population in spring

Im spending the afternoon planning the planting schedule. There are 4 houses I can plant in. 2 of them now have tomatoes growing in them, and considering those are our best sellers, we are not willing to rip them out early to plant other crops. So those 2 won't open up until October / November. Not sure if there is any reason to try planting them at that point, or wait until early spring to try to have crops in April. The other has ginger in about 2/3 of it, and zucchini in the other third. I have no problem ripping out the zucchini - but that only gives me a 4x70 bed. The ginger won't come out until late September at the earliest The last is currently empty, but is our main greenhouse. We need to get benches out, rip up landscape fabric, bring in compost and till. But - since that is our main greenhouse, and plants are our real money makers, we will need it beginning in March, I need to plan so that whatever crops are grown in there are gone by then. It is also close to a Walnut - so I have to grow walnut tolerant crops. Im thinking beets, carrots and lettuce for that house, and some brassicas away from the walnut. I will just have to rip them out come March. This year will be a real learning curve. :)
