need help picking exterior colors! HELP!
Comments (5)thanks for the replies! egbar - I was thinking a deep navy color for the shutters and door. I agree the above color is too cool. The gray shutters are a good idea also with a lighter stucco color. i'm going for a more modern look with stainless hardware and lanterns. so maybe yellow is out of the question. nosoccermom - the grout color is gray. a brown gray is a good idea. its just so hard to find the right one! so confused!...See MoreColor Help needed for cottage exterior
Comments (31)You've accomplished wonders in improving your cottage--which is adorable! Even though the photoshopped windowbox is cute, I think your windows are large and low enough that it really would look just as good IMHO to just add some taller plantings below. I think some tall delphiniums with a deep bluish-purple bloom would really go nicely with your pink flowers and would come back each year. Your yard is really lovely already! If you decide to do shutters, I think a dark charcoal or black would look nice, although michelle's dusty red ones are perfect for her garden shed. One thing I've found on GW is that some on here feel that shutters should actually be large enough to cover the windows (if closed), so your space wouldn't meet that criteria. (Mine don't either, but I have them and like mine.) For the foundation and chimney, I'd paint that either the same color as the house, or a slightly darker shade. Your plantings will show up nicely against that. And for the front door --I vote for dark red since I can't quite picture the blue, but once I saw it, might love it as well. Your home looks so inviting....See MoreNeed help picking white for old 1901 small cottage farmhouse
Comments (9)Well, OK - you know what you want! So, next step is just to try some whites. Ive been using Zinsser Exterior Permawhite in satin for my white trim - straight out of the can - and have had good results with it. In fact it typically lasts better and long onger than the fancy schmancy Sherwin Williams Seafoam Green that I have on the other parts of the house. Its a nice true slightly warm white - not an identical match to the white aluminum storm windows but close enough to read the same. (It is thin and goes on thin, and I often need multiple coats - up to 4 or 5 - but the end result is a nice hard smooth surface. No I dont work for Zinsser LOL.) What color is the roof? Some people ignore the roof thinking it has no bearing on what their wall and trim colors should be, but thats a mistake I think... unless you're planning to replace the roof in the foreseable future I also give some thought to the neighbor's colors, not that anything has to be matchy or harmonize.... just to avoid flagrant clash which would have the effect of possibly making both houses less appealing. It happens sometimes!...See MoreShingle/Stone cottage - need help with exterior color
Comments (1)WOW I think just copying the colors used in the drawing would be stunning - is that a depiction of your house + stonework that would be used? In the drawing, you see how the weathered gray of the windows and trim and roof shingles + the gold brown of the doors tie in to the color of the stone. Keep it simple. You dont want to upstage the stonework with adding in a bunch of extraneous colors. Even white if too bright or stark would be too much contrast I think and give the house a less cohesive and a more busy look....See MoreUser
