Something's wrong with my goose
Comments (7)Just got back from the vet's. We saw a vet who is the local zoo vet and he takes care of barnyard animals. I told him the whole story, then he subdued Mr. Goose by holding his feet. Mr G tucked his head in his breast and was the most submissive I have seen him in 17 years. The vet then pulled each wing out to its full extension and the goose didn't make a PEEP. He listened to his lungs (clear) and said he couldn't find anything wrong with him, although his breastbone ridge is a little prominent (indicating loss of muscle mass, probably due to age he said). He decided that he should have 2 days of antibiotics just in case. I suggested, early in the visit, that it might be the heat. "See how he's breathing through his mouth?" I said. "And he's not talking like he usually does or trying to peck us." By the end of the visit, the goose wasn't breathing through his mouth, he was muttering quietly to himself, and he was grooming himself. The vet said that when I said it might be the heat, he thought I was nuts because he's never heard of that. I suggested that considering that the goose spent his first 15 years in Northern California, where it gets to 100 maybe 3 days a year, and has been here only a few summers... and this is the first period with sustained high temps like we've had recently... He said by the end of the visit, he was inclined to agree with me, based on the goose's behavior change after he'd been in the AC for half an hour. He also said that when I pulled his wings out and got resistance plus he made a painful sound, that it probably was because I wasn't restraining him and he was just letting me know he didn't like what I was doing. If I had grabbed his feet like the vet did... So, that's the story... the vet suggested that during the hot part of the day that I bring him in the house and put him in the tub (I fill it with water). We're headed toward 85 degree temps in a few days, so I'll be bringing him in the house between now and then for guest privileges. And, no, he doesn't have a little silver bell so he can summon me to bring him treats. :-) One more thing... I told the vet I'd been feeding him whole corn and cracked corn the whole 17 years I've had him (the local feed store told me I should feed him that back in the beginning). The vet said that corn had very little protein, lots of carbs, and that I should find a waterfowl mix for him. He also said that he seemed to be doing pretty well on a corn diet, especially at his age. Okay, I'm done. Thanks for listening. :-) Carol...See MoreYou know there's something wrong
Comments (26)Wintersowing in milk jugs, here, too. Gardening of any kind when it's below zero outdoors, snowing and blowing, is a good thing. I garden indoors, too, with a four shelf lighted rack filled with blooming African violets. In fact, I accidentally found help for my winter depression because I set up this rack in my bedroom a few years back in an effort to keep the plants safe from my toddler grandson. I have the lights on a timer and found that unlike an alarm clock, when the lights click on and bathe the room in artificial "sunshine" I am wide awake and ready to take on the world. In fact, in my new house the AV's on the rack are in the room at the end of the hall, next door to my bedroom. The doors to both rooms always stand open (I live alone now) and even though it is not direct light on my bed, if still feels like "dawn." No more hiding under the covers, hitting the snooze. I feel just as cheerful in winter as I do in high summer when the sun is up well before 6 a.m. (All that's missing is a few bird calls!) I know everyone can't fit a plant rack in their bedroom (nor would they want one) but it does work for me! :-)...See MoreSomething wrong with my machine?
Comments (22)I left the spool on the back pin after winding the bobbin, adjusted the tension and that did the trick! Tension is at a 5 (!) now. I ran out of thread on the bobbin 2x and the spool 2x though (cut some off from the bobbin and wound it on the spool the 1st time, last time just took the tail and held it in the needle until finally couldn't even do that, then handsewed the final 4"). This apron has been a PITA and now DD doesn't even want to tie it in the back "b/c it bunches"! I don't know if I even want to make her any *clothes* but she's been complaining so much about her pants being tight that I figured I have to make her some knit pants, and last night it took literally 20 minutes to get her shoes on b/c she didn't like the feel of her socks, went through her drawer trying on socks until I finally pulled some out of the hamper and put them on her. If I could knit socks w/o any seams at the toes I would! Any other things I should know? Should the thread come off the front or the back of the spool for a vertical pin?...See MoreIs there something wrong with my potatoes?
Comments (22)"Mainly the bottom" Yeah, that's what I figured and that has been the same result that most everyone who used this method of growing has discovered. One thing to consider with this method is that late season varieties supposedly take better to this method of growing because they supposedly produce all along their buried stems. Personally, I would just use a container half as tall as the garbage can next time. You would get the same result but you'd be using much less mix. Oh, you should know that sweet potatoes have a completely different growth habit than regular potatoes. They may share a common name but they aren't related. Rodney...See MoreLaura LaRosa (7b)
