Fig Jam Do I really need to blanch the figs/

This is the first time I have enough figs to make jam. I have the brown turkey fig and it has produced figs a few at a time. I harvest them wash and chop then put them in the freezer for jam making when it gets cooler. All the recipes I have found require a boiling bath for about 10 min. pouring this off then making the jam. Now I haven't done the boiling water. Do I need to. Does anyone know the purpose of the boiling water/
