Cleaning tile with dishwasher detergent....
Comments (9)I FINISHED!!!! Finally finished cleaning tiles and grout in 2 bathrooms. Could not get grout clean/clean in one bathroom and had to use 2 coats of paint on grout. The other bathroom only needed one coat. None of the grout cleaning solutions I tried worked very well. Could not get the right color of grout colorant so I used Behr's Semi-Gloss tinted to desired color using Home Depot Scanner for color mixing instructions to match the tile background color (had a leftover tile). Did not dilute the Semi-Gloss so it should be more washable, and last longer than other paints. The other bathroom had painted grout for many years before this. Think I used outside house paint thinned at that time. Yes, I am too old to tackle jobs like this, however, the results are stunning if I do say so. After having house cleaners for a little over a year, the grout was filthy and tile dull. Now you can see the beauty of the tile and even see your reflection! Next is the downstairs tile/grout cleaning project of the entry, dining, kitchen, breakfast, bathroom so we can enjoy the beauty of the tile and grout again. No, I will not paint grout in these rooms, hopefully I will be able to find a cleaner that will work magic plus a grout scrub brush with broom handle in order to use standing upright!! My knees/back/muscles in general have not recovered yet! Krissie...See Morestrange dishwasher stink question
Comments (19)I have 2 Bosch DWs and have used them regularly for almost 4 years. If I notice anything a little funky smelling, I do a cancel/drain or a quick rinse and then drain and clean the filters -- couple or few times a year perhaps. Not an every load issue at all. The only time I've had a real stinker was with stuff sitting in my disposal. I was about to make a service call when I did another round of filter and disposal cleaning. I stuck my hand down each to see if anything was stuck -- found a glob of mystery gunk which I suspect to have been chicken fat or something similar wrapped around the center of the prep sink disposal. I have more faith in DW design engineers than I do installers and even half the repairmen. I've watched too many of them in action. There is a reason for the smell and you may need to play detective, do some cleaning (I've heard lemonade drink mix packets work too and you may have that rather than buy Tang) and check your installation and drain work. I've never used a DW cleaner or drink mix in either DW, but I'd try it before making a service call....See Moredishwasher cleaners
Comments (2)Dishwasher detergent to remove grease or citric acid to remove lime scale - although not in the same cycle. Hottest wash possible. Dedicated dishwasher cleaners are either a simple form of dishwasher detergent or a mixture of different acids - but for a premium price....See MoreDish detergent crystalized in dishwasher
Comments (4)I am not an expert, but it sounds like your parents are using too much detergent. Is the Finish in a powder form or the "Powerball"? If it is the powder, tell your parents to use half what they were using. If it is the Powerball, tell them to switch to a powder so they can control the amount better. You mentioned 8 years of use. Detergent manufacturers have been tinkering with their detergent formulas for the last several years, ever since phosphates were prohibited. So the amounts that used to work 8 years ago won't work today. The phosphate-free formulas work better with some water than other water (depending on pH of your local water), or some water needs more or less detergent than others. Also, are they using Rinse-Aid? If not, it might help if they add that. One more tip - sometimes detergent doesn't dissolve because the water is not hot enough. Check your parent's water heater to see if it is bringing the water to a hot enough temperature. Also, have your parents run the hot water in the sink before turning on the DW. Sometimes when the first water coming into the DW is cold, and it takes a while for the DW water to heat up, the detergent won't dissolve. Get a headstart on this by running the hot water in the kitchen sink until it runs hot....See Morelarsi_gw
