Comments (19)Hman, I think I read the same info you did (linked by a Nafex member). To me, the evidence seems pretty anectodal. A few countries banned neonicotinoids and bee populations supposedly stabilized (I'd like to see the statistics from countries that did not ban neonicotinoids.) Regarding the article, I must say, it is poorest research correlation I can think of. There are so many variables affecting bee health, to assume there is a linkage b/t neonicotinoids and colony collapse disorder without isolating any other variables leaves so many questions, it renders the conclusions worthless. I can remember when people where convinced GM plants were the culprit of CCD (I mean really convinced.) Strangely, that hypothesis has fallen out of disfavor. The Sierra Club has taken advantage of the opportunity and is lobbying congress to ban neonicotinoids. You know as well as I, the Sierra Club would ban every pesticide they could, if they had the power. I'm not saying we should dismiss the possible causal relationship (of neonicotinoids and CCD) rather, wait for real research to answer the questions. If neonicotinoids are demonstrated by research to cause bee disorientation on non-blooming crops, and thereby implicated in CCD, that's one thing. But so far, the loose linkage leaves a lot of doubt in my mind. Lastly, one other piece of the puzzle that leaves me skeptical is that some neonicotinoids (ex. Assail) are registered as Reduced Risk Pesticides by the EPA. The primary criteria are low impact on the environment (i.e. bees) and low mammalian toxicity. There has been extensive research done to be able to register these compounds as Reduced Risk Products. I'm not saying more research shouldn't be done, but I'm unwilling to accept loose correlations in favor or conclusions from hard research....See MoreStink bugs
Comments (14)Here everyone is trying to help me and I disappear for a couple days. Sorry. First, of course I should have taken a photo. I haven't seen one in the last day or so but if I do I promise to send one. I looked at the BMSB and LFB and they look so similar that I'll have to catch another one to determine. However, from what I read they emit a bad, well, "stink" whereas I have only smelled what I described as "green apples". Strange (as some of you agreed about) as that explanation is, if you google things along the line of "bug that smells like green apples when killed" it comes up with countless posts of people describing that exact same odor (green apples) and I didn't know that when I used it as a description. And in all those posts, the "answers" and/or corresponding bug described is the "western conifer seed bug". If you look up the WCSB on various bug sites its often described as smelling like green apples when squashed. SO I'm more confused as ever. I do have a stand of about 10 giant white pines 100 yards from my home, but I'm in the Southeast (TN). I know this is a fruit tree site, and the reason I'm posting this here is because I know various stink bugs damage fruit so I thought you all might be familiar with them AND whether or not I should do anything different to prepare for a possible infestation in the spring? Anyway, next one I see I'll get a photo and maybe that will help you help me. Meanwhile, thank all of you for taking the time to try and help me....See MoreWorm Compost Stinks And Draws Flies
Comments (8)No. General assumption is worm castings smell good. General assumption is stench comes from an aerobic bacteria. Meaning NOT aerobic. Aerobic means oxygenated (sort of) . Static water in a pot saucer isn't getting aerobic exercise. Thirsty flies will find interesting water wherever it is. That water is safe to put in your lawn. (IMO) A fine, light spray of rubbing alchohol will drop them like . . . flies . . . if you can do that without hurting anything else. I keep sticky fly tape by indoor plants when the situation seems to merit. Don't bother with anything fancier than those in the link. They don't work better and you are apt to want fairly frequent changes. Not very many people are entertained by the sight of a tape with lots of flies on it. Most importantly don't let this experience stop you from using castings to grow plants. Some fertilizers will interfere with castings. I, and possibly others, would rather you didn't use any other fertilizers. You might not get Miracle results, but you are way more likely to get healthy plants. What have you done with years worth of unused castings ? We all recommend you read lots of posts on the forum: get up to speed and join the group. Here is a link that might be useful: fly tape...See MoreQuestion About Clearing/Dishwashing After A Meal
Comments (22)I don't mind if people want to "help" by bringing things into the kitchen from the dining room, but that's as far as I want to go. I don't put my good china or crystal in the DW and would rather set it aside to do later or in the morning. I will reluctantly let guests help put leftovers away, clear the dining room or prepare it for coffee and dessert -- but please don't try to help me clean up my kitchen! In fact, the few times I've agreed to letting guests have it their way and let them help clear up and do the dishes -- has resulted in broken china and delaying the evening. It seems like I'm always glad to see those people on the other side of the door! This makes me sound like a shrew for sure! But I've enjoyed a reputation as a good hostess, and people forcing themselves into my kitchen and into my way of doing things sets me back a little. I accommodate them to placate them, but it's MY house, after all! My sister is the best! She will always say -- "I need a job or something to do." I always say "you're on vacation" and then she says, "I know your at your best when everyone's out of your kitchen".
