Best Natural Dishwashing Detergent..?
Comments (19)You can make a natural dishwasher agent by combining equal parts of washing soda and borax (that 20 mule team stuff). Use about 2 T. of the stuff per load, in the first wash only. Then fill your rinse agent dispenser with white vinegar. This may work for you, depending on your local water. Some people have reported a white film from using this powder, but I think that might be taken care of by doing the vinegar thing. I find the white vinegar rinse has cleared up some glassware that I thought was clouded (etched) forever. Another side bonus of this natural combo is that the odor problems I had with my dishwasher when using the gel detergents are now gone....See Morekenmore dishwasher detergent dispencer question
Comments (7)Oh...I hated my Kenmore DW for this very issue. I first used liquid detergent squeezed from a bottle, but that seemed to dry and glue the dispenser closed when I'd use the delay start. I'd open it in the morning only to find the soap hadn't dispensed. I switched to Finish Powerball tabs only to find the the stuff baked on in the dispenser like you've experienced. Part of the issue is that any of my big pots and pans in the lower rack blocked the dispenser lid when it tried to open during the cycle. IMHO, the placement of the dispenser is horrible. I often re-arranged dishes so as not to block the dispenser, but that was difficult sometimes as the dispenser is located right at pot level. The other issue was that the lid just sometimes didn't disengage. Maybe it was from being blocked too often early on in its life. When I had a repair tech out looking at my rangetop, I asked him about the DW. He said its common for that to happen. He suggested either ordering a new dispenser from Sears to see if that helped, or just listening for the time when the dispenser would open and then opening the DW to check to make sure it dispensed the detergent. I chose the latter, but that got old reeeeeeaaaal fast as I run the DW about twice a day. I remember starting the DW at night when I just wanted to go to bed, and waiting around for the dispenser opening time. Ugh. This was just part of the reason I couldn't wait to get rid of my Kenmore. I was so happy when it died. I bought a heavily discounted clearance Miele and have never experienced this issue as the dispenser is located much better on the door. And it's leagues quieter also. Oh...and it cleans better....See MoreKirkland Dishwasher Detergent Pods-- FAIL
Comments (8)Dadoes I don't have a prewash dispenser. I have to find the spoon that I used to use for the Cascade. Meanwhile I'll stay with the Miele tabs. Cutting them in half seems to work well for me-- no etching and no greasy dishes. I am careful to not prewash super well so that the detergent has something to "eat" when it washes. Yesterday I returned the remainder of the pods to Costco and showed them the photographic evidence. The clerk was stunned and said she wouldn't be using them either!...See MoreDishwasher and DW detergent small talk
Comments (4)Ci_Lantro now why did I never think of using parchment. Thank you, I'll remember that and I bake sweet potatoes frequently. Cool that we have the same dishwasher and my water is very soft city water so maybe that is the difference. Sea Sea I haven't thought to check I dont know if my heater activates on the one hour cycle. I purge a few times using the one hour until the main wash cycle fills up but generally I'm in the kitchen anyway not like I'm actually babysitting lol. I did check the wash temp on this cycle but can't remember what it was. I'm sure though that it was an acceptable temp IMO or I wouldn't use it...you know my attraction to hot water. Lol. I'm gonna have to check the temp again now or I won't stop wondering. Haha. Bjorn, yes I remember when you bought your newer dishwasher, actually I think I remember when you were trying to decide which machine and how a quick cycle was important since you host large gatherings. Looks like this turned out to be very good choices for both of us. I don't do much entertaining but with a family of five and my two sons often visiting and the fact I cook every-single-day-of-my-life (hahaha) I do really need the quick cycle and I know you cook just as much for a lot of folks. Thanks everyone!!!...See Morekrissie55
