winter fertilizer and crabgrass pre emergent

Hello i really dont have much of any crabgrass i mostly spot treat it early in the season and do a second application . but this year i am going to plan to put down the pre emergent in the fall i just need to know how much earlier do i need to put this down before i apply a winter fertilizer.

for example if im going to obviously be applying fertilizer in September to bring back my dormant grass then ,two more applications preemgent and winterize just need to know the right time to put these down or can you put them down same time ? My pre emergent has dimension in it.

Im in North Jersey.

I'm not really understanding what you're trying to do, are you saying you want to put down pre-emergent in late fall for crabgrass?

Your pre-emergent should be put down on a schedule. It should be re-applied before the effectiveness wears off in order to control different weed types with different germination schedules. Application of a fertilizer should have nothing to do with your pre-emergent timing, it can be done anytime.

Thanks for the advice everyone. We tend to have wet Springs around here so chances are good that the weeds will get what they are wishing for. :) Therefore I think a pre-emergent is a good idea, at least for the first year as CDUB suggested. The other factor is the fact that I have no idea what the turf will look like once all the this snow melts. It might be thinned out or in other worrying shape. I left it at 3" for the Winter and I applied Urea in late November after top growth stopped so hopefully it should get going well once the weather starts warming up. Should I cut it short for the first cut of the year? I read somewhere that it's a good idea to cut off all the dead top growth from the Winter. What do you recommend for pre-emergent? Thanks. The pre-emergents are a useful product, but they have their limitations. First, they have a window of opportunity. That might or might not be the 'useful life' listed on the label. That depends, obviously, on the conditions under which the product was put down. So let's assume you spray, and it's supposed to be good for three months. It might even stretch to four, but you can't count on it. Well, poa annua germinates in the fall. Those seeds become viable in the fall, winter over, and sprout in the spring. Crabgrass germinates in late spring, AND LATER. One would think that one could simply overdose the lawn, and spray every thirty days for twelve months, and that would do it. It might, by the way. I've been sorely tempted. But size of lawn, and expense, have kept me from it. Other than that, you've got the concept of re-seeding. The pre-emergents aren't a WEED (with a W) killer, they are a SEED (with an S) killer. The theory of a pre emergent is that 'no seed will germinate'. That's how you stop the cycle of poa, or crabgrass, continuing to grow from seeds from prior crops. But that means that grass seed won't germinate either, doesn't it? If your lawn is primarily Kentucky Bluegrass, that's less of a problem, as you can, with fertilization, get the existing plants to spread out, and fill in bare or thin spots. That's not possible with the ryes, and fescues. They don't spread much, if at all. Striking some sort of balance, between the need to re-seed, and putting down pre-emergent, is more art than science. Sometimes you get lucky. Sometimes you don't. But that really is the nub of the problem. But needing to put down multiple applications of pre emergent, over the course of a year, is fairly common. Having to do it for a two year or three year period, is fairly common. You've got to break that cycle of weeds-to-seeds-back-to-weeds-again. And it ain't easy.

Last year, the crabgrass pretty much took over a 15x12 foot section of my front lawn. The crabgrass moved in after that section got churned up by a skunk looking for grubs - crabgrass tends to take hold in disturbed soil. I didn't want to use herbicides, especially since I applied nematodes to deal with the grubs. So I waited until the crabgrass was of a size to handle easily and then got on my hands and feet and yanked it all out by the roots. When I was done the entire section was pretty much all open soil, with very little grass surviving. I overseeded and the grass came in very nicely. However, I had no illusions that there were a million seeds in there, which is what prompted my post. This spring, then, I did use the pre-emergent and CGM. I wish they didn't feel that they have to add fertilizer to the preemergent but that's all I could find. I used CGM to further suppress germination but also to try to even out the areas that didn't get pre-emergent/fertilizer. I still ended up with some patches but that's sorted itself out by now. So far, I've not seen any crabgrass in the lawn and the area that I've reseeded looks absolutely wonderful. In fact, it's come in so thick that I've had a bit of a chore trying to mow it with my reel mower. Time to sharpen those blades! :)

I was able to put down the pre-emergent but however messed up over a small section where I was supposed to apply 1/2 lb but applied 1.5 lb:(. Will it burn the grass? I had the numbers written for fertilization as well and applied that instead. Anyway here is a picture of what it looks inside. This is my first time applying pre-emergent but is it normal to look like this? It almost felt here and there like small sharp stones. I am just concerned whether I got a bad bag.

Application of pre-emergent is also dependent upon if you are planning overseeding in the fall or spring. Pre-emergent barrier will prevent all seeds from germinating. Grass seeds as well as weed seeds. So take that into consideration as well. As hawksster has mentioned, pre-emergent should be re-applied before the effectiveness of the previous application wears off. I use Prodiamine WSG 65 as my pre-emergent of choice. One application gives 6 to 8 months of protection. I apply in early May and then again towards the end of August/early September. This has worked out well for me.

actually i am going to overseed in fall .So i will be ably to apply a pre emergent in 2 months time after i overseed around early November so it wont harm new seed,as everyone says is good rule of thumb. Since i am overseeding in fall i will be able to apply more in March then again in August. I will research Prodiamine ive heard good things about dimension too thanks.

Jc411 I want to treat for weeds in fall around the same time I put down a winterize fertilizer so I won't have any broad leaf weeds or crabbgrass. For broadleaf weeds I plan to spray a selecticide

Treating for weeds should be done when weeds are actively growing. So applying weed killers during fall when weeds as well as grass is slowly heading towards dormancy is a wasted effort in my opinion.

Putting down pre-emergent in the fall to prevent crabgrass the following summer is not going to work. The pre-emergent is going to wear off and you'll have to apply again in the spring. But it will keep winter weeds under control.

You don't need to worry about crabgrass at all during the winter. It isn't going to be alive or growing. Crabgrass is a warm season annual weed. It doesn't germinate until the mid to late spring; that is when you would want to target a pre-emergent treatment.
