The Sandwich that took 5 Months to Make

Do you want what's funny? I didn't even LIKE fresh tomatoes until I was almost 30 years old. I avoided them at all costs, and now I can't get enough of them.
This past weekend, I made the holy grail of all fresh tomato meals (with the exception of tomato caprese salad) and used only the best-of-the-best of my homegrown heirlooms.
There she is... my first Sudduth's Strain Brandywine tomato of the season (next to that yellow "Kellogg's Breakfast"):
IMO, Brandywine's are the sublime epitome of what a tomato should taste like: Nice firm fleshy texture, rich tomato flavor, with just a touch of sweetness and the perfect acidity. They are my ultimate favorites.
I grew these tomatoes from seed, starting in March. They ripen later in the season, after my hybrids that I use for canning, and we eat every last one of them as the star attraction.
A BLT made with homegrown, heirloom tomatoes, to me, is a gourmet meal.
All this needed was a little salt and pepper, and this sandwich was certainly worth waiting 5 months for to make and eat! In fact, I'm going to have another tonight. :-)

Comments (13)Such memories. Our first purchased house looked so much like your pictures. Dear lassie you have a sun trap and should do wonders with any plant which loves heat. I see you know about raised beds so that is good. We now live out in rural Victoria County and it's a lot of land to handle. I had a vision of what I wanted to do about 18 years ago and it's just starting to happen. The native trees take many years to fill out. Good for you. I can envision your corn far above that board fence.Out here in the rhubarb it's not safe to plant anything tender until Victoria Day and real tender things like squash must wait until early June. Comments (11)I tried this yesterday morning. I have a six hole muffin pan from Pampered Chef and used that. I mixed up six eggs with milk as for scrambled eggs. I baked them just a bit longer as I can not stand wet eggs. I also baked some Pilsbury frozen buttermilk biscuits, fried up a bit of bacon while the eggs and buscuits baked. Yum! Yes the egg was pretty thick, so maybe next time I will use less egg in each cup. DH took one to work with him this morning and when I talked to him a bit ago, he said it was pretty good! He must have enjoyed it, or he wouldn't have said anything. Mary, if you want the toasted texture, just do the eggs and bacon ahead and freeze/refrigerate that. It only takes a minute in the toaster for the muffins, so while the eggs and bacon or sausage is heating in the microwave, the muffins can be in the toaster, and two seconds to assemble. I will be doing a lot of these for fast breakfasts in the motor home when we are on the road. Thank you, Terri, for asking about this! It will be very handy for me. And not just for the motor home. Comments (35)I get very emotional when knowing that i am spoken ill of...its just a reaction. I get angry. I'm human. But i've also learned not waste time on it. Well...not too much time anyways:) I've basically learned to disengage of the years and i'm basically turning indifferent to the situations. i dont treat anyone special. So my Dh has two kids and we've gone through some turmoil..but i've stood my ground on each occasion. Do they hate me? I dont' know? Maybe they are hating me now since they are hitting their teens. most important question: Do i care? NO. I honestly have reached the point of not caring. If you dont like me, too bad. STay away. I've shed alot of negative people out of my life. Friends, family, and my marriage has improved. It really has. I was about to divorce my DH last year. Went for counciling and realized, BM and her kids were not worth it. BM wants my DH miserable, uses her kids as pawns against him. So i've turned the tables. I confronted my Dh. Told him i understand his depression, his disappointment with his kids and told him its not his fault. Its BM.All the things she has done and said over the years. Granted thsi past year she has been quiet because she has issues she is dealing with under her household...and hte kids are spending less time with us. Whichof course makes her happy. She enjoys trying tomake my DH miserable. But he has begun shaking these emotions off and stepping bakc and saying, its not my fault. And when hsi kids try to guilt him he turns it aroudn and tells them, YOUR DECISIONS, NOT MINE, THEREFORE NOT MY FAULT. ALL YOUR FAULT. I'm so proud of him. For not taking anymore emotional abuse from BM or his kids. Its sad, yes they are stuck inthe middle, but they are also at an age of learning. ANd they must learn to respect another person. to not manipulate situations and to honestly love someone , and not call because they just 'want' materialistic things. THey are both good kids. They are. They are growing. But have been trained not to have us as family by BM due to her insecurities. They all wil have to live with it when grown up. Me. i'm concentrating on my family and trying to be happy. Nikemama, chin up. Be glad and proud of yourself as a human being and a wife that you honestly tried to help and love another person. And continue to be happy because you are a good person. And if stepson says he 'hates' (which he doens' tknow the true meaningof..) then let him hate. Continue to be happy. If your SS wants to be miserable, then its his decision to do so. Why be stress if someone else chooses this? My Sd tried to pull this one on me, and say your not my mom. I said ya your right...then i went out and enjoyed myself like Disengage did. She's also never used that card on me since. Kids, all kids, will test their boundaries. Our third Sunday brunch BLT...
only have SunGold and CubanYellowGrape ripe in the garden for snacking. So stopping at our local farm stand for tomatoes as they are ahead of us by a few weeks...
Tarragon on the toms waiting for the bacon....BLT looks messy as it should be but seems i took a couple bites before i took a pic... : ) Hellman's on top, avocado on bottom. Garden greens.
A microwave cooks a nice flat bacon...2-3 p-towels base, then bacon, then another p-towel on top...30 sec then check, 30 sec, check etc...
I use the oven low and slow on a rack as my micro is a baby tiny one.
My tomatoes, all 100+, 75 varieties are green and about to ripen. CherokeeChocolate, and these beauties should be my first homegrown BLT toms...GirlGirl'sWeirdThing...will ripen red with gold stripes.
