I've done alot of things with the tomato but surprisingly enough I've never made a tomato sandwich. So how do you construct yours?

fresh white bread (occasionally toasted) with mayo
then some crunchy penut butter then lettuce 1 leaf only or baby greens then nice big juicy slice of a dripping heirloom tomato - several varieties I have used then top with other slice of bread w mayo and cpbutter
my wife likes it on San Francisco sourdough lightly toasted
    My son could care less

My daughter likes fresh tomato replaced sometimes with an heirloom fried green tomato slice - even if it is partually turning ripe then she says their is more flavor and a little sweeter

I like a thick slice of tomato on fresh bread with mayo only or a BLT with mayo.

How do you make a PBJ sandwich?

    Q

    Comments (49)
I prefer Jif creamy peanut butter and soft spongy store bought bread (the kind that everybody here hates; BTW, I only like it for BLT's and PBJ's) Never ever do I use grape jelly. We are not big jelly fans here. Hate grape jelly, but love Booberry's grape jam. (It is gone Boo, sob sob). I also do not use strawberry. It's my least favorite jam. We use apricot or plum or red reaspberry or orange/grapefruit marmalade or anything but strawberry. And, to be honest, I prefer the peanut butter without any jam. Then I put the PB on very thin, clean the knife on the 2nd slice of bread, and smash the bread. Just like a little kid. If I use jam, the jam is very thinly spread on the 2nd slice of bread and there is no smashing involved. Dang. Whoda thunk that making PBJ's was an "art?"

How Do You Make Your Tuna Salad?

    Q

    Comments (23)
I make it like mom did and we love it. So many people that try it are converts. Drained tuna 4-6 chopped hard boiled eggs kraft mayo French's mustard diced salad olives diced DILL pickles or dill pickle relish I use several tablespoons of each of the above ingredients I always use 2 of the large size cans of quality tuna drained well. Season it with a dash of Tonys seasoning, a little sea salt, and pepper or Cavenders seasoning. I don't use anything sweet at all. That's it no other ingredients ever. Love a sandwich of it on super soft white bread. Occasionally I have been known to put crushed potato chips on my sandwich but never in the mix. I do like it on crackers too but much prefer the sandwich.

how do you cut your sandwiches?

    Q

    Comments (20)
I don't pay much attention to how I cut a sandwich, but I nearly always do. Today's sandwiches are so huge that if I pick up the whole thing and try to bite, the filling seems to slop out the other side. I can more easily control the contents if I cut a sandwich in half. Often I just pull off the top bun or bread slice and then eat the remainder with a knife and fork, because I just don't need that much bread. At home when I make a sandwich, I usually cut on the diagonal and I don't know why, I just always have. Usually I'm sharing a sandwich, I seldom eat a whole one, and that necessitates cutting or tearing. I'd rather cut and wash the knife than tear and get the filling all over. Annie

With white bread, preferably Italian, lettuce, bacon, and special homemade mayonnaise. I make mayonnaise out of whole eggs, vinegar, water and bacon fat.

Bran bread, hellmans, big fat slice of beefsteak, maybe some bacon, a slice of cheese, green leaf lettuce or baby spinach, more mayo, another slice of bread. Good with a glass of white wine or a cold pilsner. Yum.

Oh, and three paper napkins. Two just don't do it for the slurpy sloppy goodness.

bread, preferably somewhat bland so as to not to interfere with the tomato taste
mayo, hellmans, excessive amounts to counter act dryness of bread

3/4"-1" thick single slice of a very large tomato.

Very rarely some salt and pepper.

    - Start with a slice of fresh crusty white bread (preferably potato bread)
    - Drizzle on some extra virgin olive oil
    - Add one slab of vine ripened beefsteak tomato (droooool)
    - Sprinkle lightly with salt
    - Add one slab of fresh mozzarella cheese
    - Drizzle with some more extra virgin olive oil
    - Sprinkle with chopped fresh basil & oregano
    - Cover with another slice of fresh crusty bread
    - Drool and moan for a while while you admire it
    - Devour it as it drips down your arms
    - Drool and moan some more

Hope I'm not banned for posting tomato porn!

    1. Thick slice of tomato on white bread with Hellman's Mayo, sprinkled with salt and pepper. Variations:

    2. Add a layer of Basil leaves from Herb Garden

    3. Add a layer of sliced cheddar cheeese, like cracker barrel sharp white, or fresh mozzarella.

    4. Add BOTH cheese and basil leaves

    5. Chiffanade the basil instead of layering like lettuce leaves when I want a lighter basil taste.

I prefer a nice white bread so I can really taste the tomato. After 15 or so white bread Sandwich's with the above variations, I will start using soft multi grain breads like a 15 grain bread.

Last year I must have eaten well over 1/2 bushel of tomatoes during the season. I love tomatoes.

...Tomato on white bread with miracle whip.
...Tomato and american cheese on white bread with m/w
...Tomato and a/c on toasted white bread with m/w
...Grilled tomato and cheese on w/b with m/w
...Tomato slices on a plate with salt and pepper
...Tomato slices w/salt and pepper and a/c on a plate
...Chunk sliced tomatoes in a bowl with my own homemade salad dressing.
...Right off the vine in the garden plain or with salt

My homemade salad dressing for one large serving..about 1/2 cup...

4 tbls vinegar warmed in the microwave
2+ tbls sugar or to taste
    1 tsp onion powder
    1 tap garlic powder
    1 tsp paprika
    1 tsp parsley flakes
stir well and then add vegetable oil for just under 1/2 cup

Now, stir while pouring over yer maters in a bowl..enjoy!

I usually make a pint at a time for the family or sometimes a quart. I add finely chopped onions and refrigerate the jar. It's great on cucumbers or any salad.

Here's my caesar dressing while I'm at it, for you weight watchers out there. To make one serving..about a 1/2 of cup...in the following order

    ..3 heaping teaspoons parmesan cheese
..Enough minute maid lemon juice to make a fairly wet paste
    ..1 good teaspoon garlic powder
    ..A couple shakes of salt
..Several good shakes of finely ground pepper(1/4 tsp or so)
..1 to 2 tbls olive oil depending on your taste
..add vegitable oil to make nearly 1/2 cup total

omg I cant believe anyone hasent enjoyed a mater sandwich!
I only eat home grown tomatoes and lots of them while in season. My favorite is just plain white bread with mayo and a twist of black pepper. I will eat maters with almost anything else added, as long as it doesnt overwelm the mater. If it does it is something else, not a mater sandwich.

Here's my favorite mater samwich. 2 slices of my homemade honey oatmeal bread, about a half inch thick slice of a Cherokee Purple, or in a pinch, whatever's ripe, Miracle Whip, not mayo, a slice of Longhorn cheese and a little salt.

dcarch, what a beautiful presentation. What kind of flowers are those?
I would say my favorite mater sandwich would be homemade sourdough whole wheat, fresh basil, fresh homegrown tomato of any kind, mayonnaise (maybe even make fresh garlic mayo!) and sea salt/pepper.
I'd go for some bacon on this too, if splurging.

  • tiny1

Exactly. Mater sandwiches aren't supposed to have a bunch of ingredients.
I like sheepherders bread, mayo(homemade or Dukes) sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper.
    Bread recipe
    3 cups warm water
    1/2 cup sugar
    2 T. yeast
    1 cube butter or margarine
    1 T salt
    8 cups of flour

    Directions
Put water, sugar and yeast in Bosch mixer( or any other mixer you have), let stand 15 min.
Add the remaining ingredients.( Add the flour 2 cups at a time)
Mix in Bosch 10 min., then put in large Tupperware bowl and let raise for about 1 to 1/2 hours, or until the dough is double in bulk. Put in pans and let raise for another hour.
Bake at 375* for 20 minutes or until golden brown.( This recipe will make 2 large loaves of bread, one cookie sheet full of rolls, a ton of scones, or a big dutch oven size loaf).

    Scrumptious!!!

  • foose4string

I don't use mayo on mine.

    Crispy deli roll
    drizzle with olive oil
Slice of mozzarella or swiss cheese
slab of Brandy Boy(or equally tasty Beefsteak)
little more EVO on the 'mater
dash of salt and a twist of fresh ground pepper
dash of Italian seasoning(oregano and basil)
    sprinkle of Parmesan

Put in preheated 400 degree oven for about 5 minutes(or just long enough to melt the cheese and toast the roll)

If I'm in a hurry or have no rolls, I do all the above but use toasted white bread and spread margarine or butter instead of EVO.

My method is a lot like Tom's...the tomato porn guy, lol. You know this is pure torture talking about this now, months before the first ripe. You all are cruel!

You mean no one here as tried a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich!!??! THE BEST.

Cherokee Purple with a smokey/salty Provolone cheese and a bit of purple basil on a soft whole grain bread.

Also loved Pink Brandywine grilled cheese with medium-strong swiss and thinly sliced smoked deli ham on a sweet kind of bread. Amazing! Sort of like a one of the German style sandwiches...

Last year was my first with heirlooms, which I found our are great for grilled sandwiches. I kind of think that tomatoes are a lot like wine- some go with certain foods better than others. Some tomatoes go with certain types of cheese and bread better than others. The stonger the tomato, the stronger the cheese can be (and the milder the tomato the milder the cheese should be).

No one has yet said the most basic and best (in my opinion) version.

Bread, butter, tomato, salt and pepper. That's it. Simple but delicious and no strong flavours to compete with the tomato.

For me, I like a basic, yet vegetarian, BLT. Homemade bread, toasted; little bit of mayo on both pieces of bread; lettuce or spinach, whatever's on hand from the garden; tomato slices, again, whatever's ready from the garden; and vegetarian bacon strips (I prefer Morningstar's taste, but Good Life looks so much more appetizing). I don't eat meat anymore, but I couldn't give up the idea of a BLT in the summer!

  • farnell

Any bread, any mayo, any tomato! I haven't been aroung home grown very much but am looking forward to it. My parents were from the south and made them often. I still can't believe when people say they never had one.

A BLT is another good sandwich but not a 'mater sandwich that's like calling a hamburger a 'mater sandwich with a beef patty.

Okay, Foose4string comes the closest to my version:

English muffin cut in 1/2, so you end up with 2 open faced sandwiches
Thick slice of current favorite ripe tomato
    Couple of basil leaves
Drizzle of olive oil (no mayo for me)
    Fresh ground pepper
    Slice of mozzarella or provolone

Place in toaster oven until cheese starts to ooze over the sides.

    Napkins definitely required!

    1. Pan cook some thick bacon until crisp
    2. Toast good sourdough in the bacon fat
    3. Mayo, maybe a little dijon mustard on the bread
    4. Bacon
    5. Slices of tomato (I like to mix slices of Kellogg's Breakfast and Black from Tula if I've got them)with some fresh-ground pepper
    6. Some nice baby greens out of the garden
    7. Wash down with a good beer.
