How did you prepare/empty your kitchen pre-reno? Any advice?
Comments (22)I couldn't believe how much stuff was in my cabinets. The frames are staying but my GC recommended everything come out because of the dust, etc. To say the least. Everything gets dusty and dirty. I can't imagine leaving things inside during reno. Everything I don't use on a daily basis went out into the garage in boxes. No need to pack like you're moving. Some of that stuff may end up being given away or stored in the garage permanently. There were many things I haven't used in the 12 years I've been in this house, and I question why I'm hanging on to them. Food, utensils, everyday dishes, pots and pans are in boxes in my dining room. I peer into them from time to time and snag a granola bar or tin of smoked trout. My stove and fridge are still in place and work, but my sink and DW aren't connected. I've heated some soup and used the oven once, but prep and cooking really need water close by. My coffee maker and cleanup area is my guest bath. I allowed myself one of everything (plate, bowl, mug, glass, spatula, etc.). I have to remember to wipe all my dishes before washing so no particles of food go down the bathroom drain. My microwave is in my office and I rely on it to heat food for dinner. My cats think it's a great perch. I'm into my third week like this with at least another week to go before my kitchen can start being put back together. I'm surviving. People live their lives in far worse conditions. I think I'm most anxious to be able to get boxes off the floor and clean the place. Everything's dirty and sticky. Good luck with your kitchen! Comments (10)Would you turn your fridge so it faces the stove? Seems awkward faced that way in a galley type set-up. I guess if it were my kitchen, I'd seriously consider losing that one odd-facing upper cabinet and go with something full height as suggested. As a pantry, why not? It would be super handy there. A shallow base faced the same way making a corner would be a distant second choice but that's just me. I think if you are going galley (which it seems what the space wants) then go galley and lose the corner deal-io. Fwiw, I've never had a trash in a cabinet until about 4 weeks ago and I am now a big fan of trash in a cabinet. It's right next to my sink and is so stinkin' handy there I can't believe it. Really glad I budged the dishwasher down 12" to make room. You know, they do make a step pedal for a trash cabinet, too, so you could still be a 'step and toss' gal!...See MoreLOOKING for: crock pot /pot roast
Comments (3)Then may I suggest a Dutch Oven? Brown the meat in a little bit of fat...oil, bacon grease whatever. Brown slowly so all sides are nice and browned. add a chopped onion a clove or so of crushed garlic, about 1 1/2 cups liquid...either beef broth wine, beer veggie broth or a mixture of some of the above and scrape up the browned bits in the pan, cover and place in a 225 oven for 3 or 4 hours, depending on the size of the piuece of meat, add your potatoes after about 1 1/2 hours....and I like to add carrots too at that time. Thicken the gravy with a slurry of a little more broth/wine and flour and serve with the meat. Much better than cooking it to mush in a crock pot. Linda C...See MoreCrock pot-pot roast recipe?
Comments (5)I season the meat with salt, pepper, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce, then use one packet of brown gravy mix, one packet of onion soup mix, 1.5 cups of water.... I also quarter a medium onion and drop it into the crock pot. I add potatoes (peeled and sliced the long way) and carrot chunks. I've never had complaints and it's always gone in short order!
