How to wash light plastic things in the dishwasher?
Comments (4)I haven't been putting plastic items in the dishwasher at all after reading about BPA leaching into food after plastic is damaged by the heat it is exposed to in the dishwasher. Apparently you can't necessarily see the degradation that washing plastic items in the dishwasher causes. This article is about why weight loss may be stalled, but Number 2 explains about why washing plastic in the dishwasher is a bad idea. This isn't the only place I've read it. About light things flipping, the only suggestion I have is making sure the light item is wedged pretty tightly between other items. That doesn't work all the time though. Here is a link that might be useful: Plastic in the dishwasher...See MoreQ for those of you who use dishwashing detergent in the washer
Comments (35)osxaddict~ D/W det. will not eat up your clothes... I had heard this too, but tested it & it's not true. When I switched to a FL I wasn't sure how to get my DH's filthy work clothes clean as I had been used to using Dawn liquid in my conventional TL which worked great. So, I tested 3 different kinds of d/w det. (Cascade powder, Cascade Action Pacs & Electrosol tabs) on some denim I had in my sewing room, letting a piece set in a bowl of water w/ the det. over night... All 3 pieces of fabric were just as strong the next day as they were when I put them in. I realize 1 night doesn't equal 100+ washes, but I think if it was going to do something it would've shown some signs... Also the mixture was very concentrated, in a washer it would have more water mixed w/ it. Mara~ Have you ever used Oxi Clean? I use that on whites & lights, & my DH's work clothes & really like it. But, I also use the Cascade Action Pacs on my DH's work clothes & it really works good too. I've never actually put the Cascade powder in w/ clothes, I only use it to clean my washer periodically, I may have to try this w/ DH's greasy jeans. I also use the Sears det. w/ Oxi added... It's cheap & does a good job IMO. Good luck! Shannon :)...See MoreUpdate on using dishwasher detergent in washer
Comments (16)I forgot to say -- I used the powder form of Cascade w/Dawn. I also forgot to say I soaked and washed the white clothes (all cotton) in hot water. plumbly, I have not wanted to use dishwasher tablets in the washer for the very reason you mention even though I washed the whites in hot water -- though I do use the Finish/Electrosol tablets (the grey/white/red'ball' ones) in the dishwasher. Several local stores, including BJ's, our favorite warehouse store, often sell them BOGO (Buy One, Get One free). Which is a fantastic bargain. Though my washer's hot water seems to get good and hot, the red ball is not needed in the washer and I'm not willing to risk any problem from it. suburbanmd, thank you for that link! It has a lot of valuable information. Thank you, May, for your kind words. I can't tell you how thrilled and relieved I was to see how clean the clothes came, and without any fading or discoloration! I hope your results are as effective if you choose to use Cascade as a detergent booster....See MorePlease Tell me one thing you'd like to change about your washer
Comments (12)One thing I would change: Get the delayed start timer to be more able to measure timeframes that are less than an hour. The one I have lets me choose hours. Apparently also less than an hour, but it's not very fine-grained there. The dial LOOKS like it takes delay start times of less than an hour, but it doesn't really do that. Sometimes I'm going out to do an errand, and I want it to start and finish before I get back. Instead, it hasn't even started yet when I come home, or it has barely started. Defeats the purpose. Counterproductive. The complete opposite of what I wanted. Frustrating. So, I've had to teach myself to turn the dial to the last click (also very coarse and not very finegrained). Even then it's not impressive. Why can't I have a delay of 10 minutes? Why can't it be easy to turn, and reliably set at ten minutes? OK, I realize that many will say "who cares" and "why do you need to delay start for ten minutes". This is the feature that I want, for my own reasons. It will determine my next purchase. If I move I'm selling with a wonderful FL washer already installed and in its place. HTH...See Morehcbm
