liquid dishwashing detergent - where are the suds?
Comments (48)Totally agree with you. I used to use Palmolive as it seemed "sudsier" than Dawn. But lately it is horrible and like you I have to keep add more soap and more water to get the dishes even relatively clean. For the commenter that said to "use your dishwasher" as it uses less water--many plastic, fragile and even some cookware items CANNOT be washed in the dishwasher. So you still need a hand dishwashing alternative for those items. I believe the changes are due to environmental regulations that we don't even have any idea were passed that the companies have to abide by. Or they are doing it themselves to improve their ESG scores. If that is the case I think the fact we are all using MORE soap and MORE water to get dishes clean defeats the purpose of changing formulations. I'm going to be asking several of the manufacturers exactly this. If I hear back I will share what they have to say here....See MoreAnyone use dishwasher detergent as a laundry booster?
Comments (24)I agree that the dishwasher detergent is probably too harsh for clothes. I also want to point out that dishwashing liquid like Dawn causes too much sudsing, and can cavitate the pump on a regular washer, and should never ever be used in a HE washer. I use the soak cycle and either Clorox 2 or Oxiclean. For the worst I have a small stash of STPP, the phosphate compound removed from detergents to prevent algae overgrowth in waterways. I use it extremely sparingly, a teaspoon at a time as a laundry booster, just a couple times a year, if that often. I am still using the rinse only cycle with no spin before I wash my clothes. It seems to make a bigger difference than anything else. The clothes are submerged in water, not half-submerged. No way to alter the water level setting, as it does it by weight....See MoreIs it my dishwasher or my detergent?
Comments (26)there seem to be several different solutions to the same types of problems so i'll just add in my 2 cents on what happens here. our well water has a fair amount of iron in it (we test it for several things about once a year and because our water softener pooped out several months ago, we had 3 different companies here this week and they tested the water for us too). everyone is in agreement that in spite of the iron, the water remains relatively soft but warn us we should expect staining in the laundry and inside of the dishwasher. (the iron is not a health problem.) haven't found a problem in the laundry yet and yes, the inside of the dishwasher has always gotten streaky stains in it. a long time ago i bought "glisten" for that and it works great! but someone told me that citric acid works and i bought a jar of tang--much cheaper and also works great! i've never been one to "pre-wash" the dishes--just scrape off food leftovers and that seemed to be fine until we got a new dishwasher about 3 years ago. all of a sudden the dishes didn't look as good. as sheila and all the others said, hot water fixed that problem! we run the water in the sink until it's hot and then turn on the dishwasher. such a simple thing made an immediate difference for us!...See MoreDishwasher detergent --- homemade??
Comments (15)Oh, you're exactly right Cynic. And I do go for long spells of not using the dishwasher. Right now I am in the "use dishwasher spell". I think there is a tiny bit of time saved by ... say glasses.. where you give it a quick splash to rinse out the milk. Then, several glasses accumulate in the dw, so then in order to accumulate enough in the dw to merit running it, I start adding other things over a period of a few days (but they would need more thorough cleaning than a spash before putting the dw... according to my compulsion. LOL) I could easily live without the dw with just dh & I here. But it is nice when the "kids" come to visit....See Morebrutuses
