Charlie's Soap ~ Laundry Booster & Hard Water Treatment
Comments (14)@ Cavimum I always thought 4 grains per gallon was considered relatively soft, but a quick googling says that 4 GPG would be considered moderately hard water, as you said (USGS defines hard water here). CS laundry booster and hard water treatment may help a little, but I wouldn't expect a major change given your hardness values. I have a whole house softener, so my water has 0 hardness. CS still gave me dingy whites and did not clean as well as my other products. It also did not make my clothes feel soft, as others have claimed, despite repeated washes. I eventually stopped using CS because the results were unsatisfactory. Granted, I'm a picky person. My suggestion would be to buy the CS laundry booster and see how it goes. If you are happy, great. If not, switch to another product and donate your CS detergent stash to a local animal shelter - the puppies will love you forever. Keep the laundry booster to use with any other product you buy down the road. If I were you I would not buy the EcoVantage - there is nothing "eco" about it except the name and it doesn't clean much better than CS. The full ingredients list is not disclosed anywhere, and there are no environmental claims on the label except for the name of the product. I think it's smoke and mirrors. I highly recommend Bi-O-Kleen Premium powder. It's scent-free, environmentally friendly, and most importantly, it cleans well. That's where I would start. You may also like Vaska scent-free. It claims to be as effective as Tide while being natural and using no enzymes. It's herbal-based cleaning at its best, and the lavender scented version is my go-to detergent. It also leaves your clothes much, much softer than any other product (without fabric softener)....See MoreQ for those of you who use dishwashing detergent in the washer
Comments (35)osxaddict~ D/W det. will not eat up your clothes... I had heard this too, but tested it & it's not true. When I switched to a FL I wasn't sure how to get my DH's filthy work clothes clean as I had been used to using Dawn liquid in my conventional TL which worked great. So, I tested 3 different kinds of d/w det. (Cascade powder, Cascade Action Pacs & Electrosol tabs) on some denim I had in my sewing room, letting a piece set in a bowl of water w/ the det. over night... All 3 pieces of fabric were just as strong the next day as they were when I put them in. I realize 1 night doesn't equal 100+ washes, but I think if it was going to do something it would've shown some signs... Also the mixture was very concentrated, in a washer it would have more water mixed w/ it. Mara~ Have you ever used Oxi Clean? I use that on whites & lights, & my DH's work clothes & really like it. But, I also use the Cascade Action Pacs on my DH's work clothes & it really works good too. I've never actually put the Cascade powder in w/ clothes, I only use it to clean my washer periodically, I may have to try this w/ DH's greasy jeans. I also use the Sears det. w/ Oxi added... It's cheap & does a good job IMO. Good luck! Shannon :)...See MoreUpdate on using dishwasher detergent in washer
Comments (16)I forgot to say -- I used the powder form of Cascade w/Dawn. I also forgot to say I soaked and washed the white clothes (all cotton) in hot water. plumbly, I have not wanted to use dishwasher tablets in the washer for the very reason you mention even though I washed the whites in hot water -- though I do use the Finish/Electrosol tablets (the grey/white/red'ball' ones) in the dishwasher. Several local stores, including BJ's, our favorite warehouse store, often sell them BOGO (Buy One, Get One free). Which is a fantastic bargain. Though my washer's hot water seems to get good and hot, the red ball is not needed in the washer and I'm not willing to risk any problem from it. suburbanmd, thank you for that link! It has a lot of valuable information. Thank you, May, for your kind words. I can't tell you how thrilled and relieved I was to see how clean the clothes came, and without any fading or discoloration! I hope your results are as effective if you choose to use Cascade as a detergent booster....See MoreDoes anyone have advice on homemade laundry detergent
Comments (6)I found using homemade laundry detergent more expensive than Charlie's, and it didn't do as good a job. I eventually purchased the 5-gallon bucket, which cost me approx. 9-cents a load, about a year ago after using two of the 80-load bags. I was adding Cascade (dish washing powder - for it's enzymes) and Oxy Clean to the dry version to improve the cleaning action of the homemade detergent, and used 2-3 T. of the powder for a load of laundry. I also used either fabric softener or vinegar in the rinse because the clothing was stiff when line-dried - which equals even MORE expense. Now all I use is a tablespoon (or less) of Charlie's and I use vinegar in the rinse of the kitchen towels and the bath towels only, and probably don't even need it in them. I hang my laundry to dry either indoors or outdoors and the laundry is softer just using Charlie's than it was using homemade concoctions AND softener. So take into account ALL your laundry products that you use, not just the homemade detergent. With Charlie's, you may be able to eliminate everything else that you are using. -Grainlady...See Morelindac
