Should I consider a real estate attorney?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this.

I am considering looking at (have not yet started any processes) a home that is FSBO. It has been on the market for a long time, was listed with a RE company in the past. I did some digging on the owner, her dad passed away and she is selling the property. Her husband is an attorney and he teaches part time at the local college - real estate law.

So I could look at this that I should save some money by having no RE agents involved and he would know what needs to be done (I know very little about home purchases). Or I could be skeptical and assume he would know how to take advantage of me and I need my own person to guide/protect me.

I was in the Army so would probably go with a VA loan. I do know that would mean a VA appraisal (I am sure the home will appraise for more than the asking price) and I would pay for an inspection as well.

What would you do?
