what causes tiny leaves in a rose that should have average leaves?

User

I have a Young Lycidas Austin rose planted in a spot which recieves morning sun only. I thought this might be OK for an Austin, since here in Italy the sun is SO strong and hot. But the plant looks far from happy. Now, I know that Austins are sort of divas,so maybe it's just that the soil is too poor, but one thing in particular makes me wonder: the new leaves on the (sparse) new growth are very small sized. Is this a symptom of too little light, or just the general sulking of a greedy Austin that was placed in overly poor soil?Any ideas?
