Can a young pot-bound tree with circling roots be saved?
Comments (9)Next time you go to buy a tree, pull it out of the pot before you buy it. At least in a normal pot, you should see fine roots around the outer surface of the rootball. You may even see a few that are a little larger, but they should not be so big that you cannot either straighten them out (when you are planting the tree) or prune them away (without worrying about hurting the plant). At planting, you really don't want any roots circling around the rootball or kinked in knots. Your tree's roots will grow larger and larger as the tree grows, so picture the rootball as all those roots grow many times their current size. If all the roots are locked into a tight ball (or pot-shaped cylinder), the trees root system will not be sufficient to support the tree or supply water and nutrients. Even if some roots are able to grow out away from the tree, a potbound rootball will become more congested with age, and failure will become more and more likely. Some people even recommend complete removal of all potting material during the planting process. They believe that poor root system structure is so important, that the extra shock, brought on by bare rooting, is worth it. Personally, I prefer a more modest approach. I remove a lot of the excess potting material, but leave all that I can while still being able to ensure that all the roots are straightened out and growing away from the tree. Usually, I form a cone at the base of the plant that allows the roots to radiate away from the base of the tree and slightly down into the soil. If you have questions about this, please let me know. Sometimes describing things like this in few words is not easy. Also, see the link below for what I hope are very helpful instructions about how to plant a tree or shrub. Comments (38)I was told the overhang is 12". I'd like 15' but then we start getting into the living room. We are going to instal laminate flooring throughout the entire top floor to make things flow nicely. I'm ok with laminate in the kitchen although I know people have opinions about that choice :). I love the sliding table idea but that also impinges on the walking area between the island and living room....See MoreNeed help saving my oak sapling, please!
Comments (4)I'm just guessing, but when I've done this with oak saplings, they were very prone to transplant shock. It sounds hopeful that you're seeing new leaves, so I'd just baby it and see what happens. I always kept mine in morning sun/afternoon shade and well watered (but not soggy). What kind of soil is in the pot? I usually did a mix of good potting soil, with just a bit of my ground soil mixed in ... unless your ground soil is extremely gumbo-like and prone to not draining well. Then just use the type of potting soil nurseries use for their tree stock. I think it does need to be in a bigger pot, though, and not black plastic. A lighter plastic pot (I use the ones that look like terra cotta) may be better. Hopefully an expert comes along, but the above has worked for me....See Moresaved the best for last! Comments (2)The staged room is lovely and I think you should follow along. A 3-seat sofa and two armchairs work in almost any setting. Of course, the sofa should be 18" or less from the coffee table, so if you want to center the table with the firebox opening, the sofa will have to scoot closer. I think the TV built-in is well located, but you could change the color. I'd have a pro paint it once you've determined the colorway. In both arrangements the art is a bit too wide for the FP. Prefer to see it no wider than the firebox opening and hung 5" above the mantel without rising above the window frames. What's your plan for drapes? I think they will make the space if carefully chosen and hung. Is that hardwood or carpet? Difficult to tell from the pix. On the entry side of the room you could add a console table, lamp and art. I think you need more task and accent lighting. The ambient lighting coming from the ceiling seems fine, but lacks the intimacy that table, floor and art lamps add....See Moredjsmith02
