ordering new roses - opinions welcome!
Comments (12)What a wonderful list. You are going to have so much enjoyment out of them. Blanc Double de Coubert--a rugosa. It is very different than many on your list, but I like mine. Love those rugosa leaves. Mine took several years to really fill out. In fact, I almost chucked it by its second year. I'm glad now that I didn't. Jubilee Celebration --might be another pot candidate. Gorgeous blooms, but my plant has never been very vigorous, nor grown taller and wider than a couple feet. Maybe I just have a wimpy plant? Good luck, Kate Gold Medal might have hardiness issues. It had trouble surviving here in Zone 6. Lovely bloom, however....See Morefeeling in the dumps, new roses, need your opinions!
Comments (16)I grew Graham Thomas in a pot for about 5 years. It stayed a fairly reasonable size but it was definitely taller than most HTs would be. I had a small trellis in the pot to tie it to and that worked out well. Lovely blooms, good fragrance fair disease resistance but a water HOG! I use it as the canary in the mine for watering because it droops immediately if it's the least bit dry. So it may not be the best for a very hot, dry climate. La Marne was a lovely polyantha that bloomed nearly continuously for me. It didn't winter for me so I don't know what it's eventual size might be but it only got about 3 x 3 feet in the season I had it and that seems to be about the perfect size for container roses in my opinion. I don't remember it having a lot of fragrance but the blooms were really lovely. They would start out with more pink and even burgundy touches and then open to white....See MoreLudwigs, Calm Composure Rose
Comments (13)For anyone who is thinking of Calm Composure, especially in the current feeding frenzy with Ludwigs and Anja (I'm one of you!)... here's some helpful info I found on Calm Composure DELludpink. Hope it helps you out! (I also provided this info to HMF and requested it to be researched & added). :) http://www.ludwigsroses.co.za/flower/brumilda-van-rensburg/ Under the Ludwigs category of Antico Moderna: Brümilda van Rensburg DELludpink " Bearing beautiful, huge, long stemmed flowers in abundance, with fragrance and an unblemished longevity on bush or in the vase. The blooms’ colour is a delicate pink on the outside petals blending pleasantly with the distinct rose pink of the inside petals that deepens towards the centre. Modern urn shaped pointed buds keep on expanding as the inner petals unfold displaying an admiringly quartered bloom. The bush has an extraordinary willingness to re-sprout from the base and the older wood, each stem just carrying one big bloom, providing colour and class. The neat upright growth habit easily reaches 2m. The disease resistant leaves decorate this ornamental rose from base to tip for most of the year. A true eco-chicTM rose. The rose was named, the year 2009, in honor of the well known South African actress and public speaker 'Brümilda van Rensburg' " Eco-chic (Ludwigs ladybug icon): Genetic disease resistance. Performs without needing to be sprayed. Expected to grow above head height. Quartered rosette. Moderate fragrance. Free flowering. Good for cut flowers. Classic exhibition (for those competing) with equal symmetry....See MoreUpdate on my Ludwig's roses
Comments (10)I purchased a Belle Rouge, Bella di Todi, Roberto Capucci, St. Patrick and Calm Composure from Ludwig's and they're all doing well even in our unusual higher heat this year. The better bloomers and my two favs are: Belle Rouge and Roberto Capucci. Both have taken the heat very well by continuing to grow and bloom. If only Belle Rouge could have repelled deer, things would be close to perfect....See Morediane_nj 6b/7a
