ordering new roses - opinions welcome!

Hi!

I'm going to be ordering from a small nursery in Calgary that says they will order roses that I want that they don't have!! So if they're serious - then I can order anything!!! BWAAHAWWHAWWW!! :)

Don't worry about hardiness - a lot are going in pots to be overwintered in garage. The rest, I'm going to winterprotect and take my chances with.

OLoG is less than 3' tall here, and Julia Child was about the same.

Wow, thank you tanders and kitchenredo08 for being interested in how it turned out. I PROMISE to put up some pictures within a week. This project has had a lot of ups and downs. First, it took about three weeks for the material to arrive. When it came, I was thrilled; it was exactly what I hoped for. Then came the really fun part: installation. I was talked into the idea that we could do this ourselves. Hmmmm, not sure how to characterize that decision since this post could potentially be read by the other party to the decision ;-). Anyway, let's suffice it to say that stone tile, especially a split face is not for the novice installer. But we got it installed with just a few snafus. Then it was time for grout. We started using the pastry bag method, but abandoned it when my hand began to cramp. Switched to a float. BIG mistake. Grout EVERYWHERE in ALL of the nooks and crannies. Three weeks later and we're still chipping out grout. But we're getting close. Close enough where I'm loving it again. So anyway, it's been an adventure. My advice to anyone who wants to do stone; hire a professional. Again, I PROMISE some pictures very soon. I'm too embarassed to post my kitchen right now with chisels and nano scrub and sponges everywhere. Karen

My take-away from the "don't mix modern with old or English" was that the two are often treated differently, and look better separated. Many people treat HTs and Floribundas as bedding plants -- hard-pruning them every year, planting in groups of the same variety for emphasis. The old and English roses are more often left to grow a bit more wild. In habit, they don't match. BUT....not everyone treats their HTs and Floribundas as "bedding plants", so it's not so much "don't mix the types" as it is "don't mix the gardening styles in the same bed." In other words, "neat and clipped" roses might look odd right next to "arching and billowing" roses. At least, that's how I took it. But, in the end, it's all about personal preferences. The other consideration is color clashing between some of the brighter colored moderns and the softer colored old and English roses. But that isn't something inherent -- there are plenty of non-harsh moderns that will blend well with the old and English roses. Ultimately, I realize that Austin's books, while very informative, are also aiming to nudge favor toward his own roses and preferences. He had to carve out a new market for the roses he bred, after all. :-) ~Christopher

My last on the subject before bowing out (I hope). This is for those who might now be throughly confused. When a rrd infected mite or mites land on your rose they do so to feed and reproduce. Mites prefer to feed on tender plant tissue and buds. The initial landing places become systematic for rrd. While feeding the virus enters the plants phloem system. It must then travel down thru the phloem where it enters the crown and roots. At this point the virus is transported back up thru out the rest of the plant. There is a 3rd alternative to try. Removing the entire plant down to the crown is what you would normally do. Bagging or burning the plant material first to hopefully eliminate the mite. Then you return to dig the crown and roots. These would contain infection but no mites. So if you should think that you caught the rrd at it's first sign and it was out at the end of a cane. You might stop before removing crown and roots. You have already done the best you can to eliminate the mite. You could wait to see what grows back. If crown and roots are rrd infected new grow will be symptomatic. You will see rrd growth. At that time get it out of there. If the virus had not reached the crown or roots a nice healthy rose bush will regrow. However there is always a remote chance that a new mite could land again. Then plants would then again become infected. Hope I was understandable. And please know this is my best understanding of this disease. I do not believe I'm 100% correct. But I do believe I'm doing the best I can which the information that I've been able to gather. Good luck to all.

I agree with what Jackie said. But of course I have to add my own 2¢ worth. Lots of plants can sucker, not just roses. My tree-form-trained crape myrtle sent up suckers from the root for its first 10 years or so, and still tries now and then. There are 4 redwood trees near our house and I cut root suckers off those All.The.Time. In my personal experience, the worst offenders in the rose world are the gallicas and the rugosas, also pretty much any kind of species rose. Damasks and albas follow after that. Rose de Rescht will sucker after it is well established. So will Grandmother's Hat, though so far it stays within a foot or two of the base. The difference between own-root suckering and grafted root suckering is that if you allow a grafted plant to sucker from the rootstock, it will eventually kill the scion rose and the rootstock will take over. With own root suckering you just get more of the same rose. Sometimes more than you want. I am having a similar problem with one of my oranges, 'Midnight', a Valencia-type orange. It must be less vigorous than my other oranges because it is the only one that is doing this. I've had to cut off rootstock suckers several years in a row, and boy, that rootstock is nasty to handle. Thanks Diane - I'm going to have those in pots. Julia Child came through winter (in our old house) but was only about 1 foot tall, so I'm going to have that one in a pot. Same with OLoG. I'm really excited about getting OLOG!!!

Randy - I think I got the idea of Pretty Jessica from Celeste's photos. Pink Gruss looks beautiful too. So I'm glad you confirmed those two as good choices - those will stay on my list! :)

BRASS BAND should do great. Mine was trying to bloom in freezing temps here this winter. Probably not as cold as you get, but freezing nonetheless. Of the DA's on your list that I have, GOLDEN CELEBRATION and JANET are the best. JANET is a virtual monster... sprawling all over the place. WS2000 is another good one, and ELLE and OLOG are wonderful. HONEY PERFUME is spectacular! Blooms a lot and repeats well, and always gorgeous! A really winter-happy DA you might consider is CHARLES AUSTIN. He was blooming the end of January in between the snows and the bitter cold freezes.

What a wonderful list. You are going to have so much enjoyment out of them.

Blanc Double de Coubert--a rugosa. It is very different than many on your list, but I like mine. Love those rugosa leaves. Mine took several years to really fill out. In fact, I almost chucked it by its second year. I'm glad now that I didn't.

Jubilee Celebration --might be another pot candidate. Gorgeous blooms, but my plant has never been very vigorous, nor grown taller and wider than a couple feet. Maybe I just have a wimpy plant?

Gold Medal might have hardiness issues. It had trouble surviving here in Zone 6. Lovely bloom, however.

Kate - Thanks for the advice!! I'm going to take Gold Medal off my list. I do have a lot of roses on my list so one less won't make too much of a difference.

Jubilee Celebration - I'll get a pot for that one!

I have a number of the Austins that you listed. WS2000 is an especially exceptional rose, and is a great choice. Sharifa Asma would probably do well in your cooler climate. I have found that our hot summers really bleach out the color of Sharifa Asma. Elle is a great HT by Meilland; however, I'm not so sure about its survivability in your winters. I have two in my garden because I like it so much.

Good luck and thanks for sharing the wonderful list. Now, I have to look up some of the ones I don't have.

Thanks Jeff!! I know that Elle won't survive here; it didn't survive its winter in Edmonton, so I was planning on potting it. It will do fine in the garage over winter. The one I'm sort of worried about is WS2000. I'm not sure that it will survive here outside, but I'm going to try it. BTW, which ones are you going to look up?

Niecey - thanks for you kind thoughts! I'm REALLY looking forward to spring. I HAD to have Daybreaker after everyone here raves about it! :)

I saw Daybreaker on your list. It is the best rose I have ever had. It growes bushy and reblooms fast. It has more buds on it than any other rose I have at one time. They are stunny. Love this rose. If I could only have one it would be the winner. I forgot to mention the shinny green leaves are so pretty that it is stunning even with no flowers.

I don't think I would have ordered it without so many people in love with this rose. But, I've never been steered wrong on this forum yet! I'm looking forward to the fast rebloom!
