Wow, you sure do have plenty of hummers. I love watching them and their squabbles.

I am not so lucky. We have a few, and usually a dominant one tries to chase everyone off. How many feeders do you have? You must be filling them a lot. I remember Sunset Magazine had a recipe for a more nutritious mixture to feed hummingbirds many, many years ago. My sister tried the formula, and they liked it. I have always just used the sugar water.

sheilajoyce......right now I'm filling 6 feeders, 5 go empty twice a day. The ones a big gulp. It's just sugar water, 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. It's been unusually hot, around 88-90 degrees. The little guys have to stay hydrated. :0)

Nice! Do you get tired of refilling the feeders? My MIL gets several hundred hummers at a time during the summer, and by the end of the hummingbird season always says she is tired and ready to close the restaurant permanently.

I've tried to lure the magical numbers of hummingbirds that forces them to share, rather than chase. Even though I have lured as many as 15 to the yard at one time, they are on all sides of the house--and rarely share. I'm resigned that the numbers will never happen in my flower abundant location.

That is amazing and so cool to see. I have never seen that many all at once.

gry_falcon....yes! My DH fills them too. I need bigger bottles. Maybe plastic soda bottles?

Right now I am going through 128 oz. of sugar water each day. Every morning I am making more sugar water so it can cool & go into the fridge. Last year I went through 60 lbs. of sugar in one month. August is always the busy month, just before they start to leave.

Our hummingbird feeder looks just like your Nicole. I've had up to 3 of the little darlings at the feeder at one time, but we sure don't have as many as you do. They usually empty the bottle in a day. While one feeder is hung outside, the second one is being bleached, cleaned and ready to fill for the next day. I mix 1 C of sugar to 3 C of water and keep it in the fridge.
