apple butter help please

So, I am in the process of making apple butter for the first time. I'm using the recipe in the ball book. It calls for 4 pounds of apples cored and peeled and cooked until soft and then pureed. Then you take 2 quarts of it to use. Well, it only came out to a little bit over 1 quart. So, I just halved the rest of the ingredients. Is this ok? Also, Should of it been 4 pounds after peeled and cored? I weighed them before. Thanks!!
