Antique Telephone Chair/Table
Comments (17)Hi, I love your telephone table! It is in great condition! Last year I was antiquing and found a table like yours that was not in as good condition and it was priced $35.00. There were some scratches in the finish and the upholstery on the seat needed to be replaced. I think yours would be worth 60.00-75.00. That is a conservative estimate on my behalf. I don't feel that it is poplar as that does not hold dark stains very well at all. Usually poplar is Painted with a base color and then a finish is "built" up on it, using faux graining techniques. Of this I am very confident of. Yours does look to be a true hard wood, I would say mahogany. If you look at the back to the chair it has a poor stainig job on it. I think it may have been refinished at some point by someone who was not experienced....See MoreNeed help incorporating contemporary chairs with antique table
Comments (9)I know the table in the link I've included below is not at all like your table, but for some reason as soon as I started reading your post I thought of Shelli's Alamode blog. She seems to pretty much favor more contemporary pieces, but I like how she mixes things up. Check out her dining room and see if that helps you at all. Also, I don't know that you need to tone down the silver of the nailheads, and I've used this product so can't give testimony as to if/how well it would work, but I've noticed people here and on blogs using something called Rub 'N Buff to change hardware colors and such. Oh, and here's her kitchen table in which she's used a dark table with some white slipcovered chairs. Here is a link that might be useful: Alamode blog...See MoreIs it worth refinishing this antique oak table?
Comments (6)Looks like a nice table. You'll have to sand everything to get the old finish and stain off prior to refinishing, and that task will be difficult on the curves parts of the base - difficult but doable if you're patient. As far as filling gaps - are you referring to the vertical joints in your second photo, or the small gouges? Either way, I'd probably not use any filler if it was my table. Instead, I'd sand everything, possibly stain if you don't like the natural color, and use a clear wipe-on satin finish (I prefer oil-based poly but many other options exist). Small gouges will be visible but not nearly as obvious if you adequately remove that dark finish....See MoreAntique Stickley Dining Table - What Chairs and sideboard?
Comments (3)I would not DIY re-finish Stickley furniture from 1910. You got it "for cheap" from someone who didn't know (or appreciate) what they had. You will most likely ruin the value of what you have by refinishing it. A furniture restoration professional might be able to suggest something, but I think you just need to accept the orange of the table. If you can't accept the orange of the table, please sell it to someone who will appreciate it and buy something else that you can make your own. By the way, the chairs you have look fine to me. If you can match them, that would be easiest....See MoreJoanne Smith
