Need help incorporating contemporary chairs with antique table

Hi, everyone. I'm having buyer's remorse. Recently got a good deal on two side chairs to use with an old table. Trouble is, the chairs are contemporary (upholstered w/ straight, dark legs and silver nailhead trim) but the table is antique. I like them both, they just don't go together.

Any ideas? Is there anything I can do to the chair legs? Can I dull the shiny silver nailheads on the chairs somehow?

Could you post a picture of the table? It's hard to offer any advice without knowing what the table looks like. "Antique" could be Mission style or Duncan Phyfe or Queen Anne or Chippendale. Those chairs would work fine as is with some antique tables.

Okay, just talking through my hat here ... While the base seems to be original Wiliam IV, I'm not so sure about the top. I wonder if what you have is a married piece, made up of parts from two or three other tables. Here's my reasoning: The base has good, thick veneer and parallel saw marks, and looks very typical of the style. It's pegged, or at least has plugs over the screws. The nice bun feet are true to William IV. But tables of this era didn't have a turned plate for the connection between the top and column -- at least not that I've seen. The joint would usually look quite a bit more structural, kind of like the interior of a house wall, with bracing and brackets, etc., to keep it stable. I wonder if the column and turned plate came from another piece, possible a candle stand. The top has a shape consistent with the base, but the way the skirt is attached doesn't look right. I would not expect to see exposed screws here, but rather a glued joint with blocks behind it. I also think the skirt would be a little deeper. Could this be the top from another table, cut down to mimic the shape of the base, and with a skirt added? Whether this is the case or not, it is certainly a lovely piece. I agree with calliope: Get it to an appraiser. And not just someone who deals in antiques, but someone who knows furniture from this period.

Thanks for all your advice. I'm so glad that I didn't just rush in and start this. From the sounds of it, I WOULD HAVE ruined them . . . :^0 . . . OMGosh! I need to run all this by DH. He's been encouraging me to call up and order a set I like that I saw in Phoenix Home & Garden magazine spread. I can't imagine ordering anything that big and expensive sight unseen, though. Hmmmmmm, there may be a weekend trip to Scottsdale in the offing ;^) In the mean time, I need to decide whether I want to paint the set a brown first and them give the Gel Stain a go or just leave it as is until I get a new set. BTW, I haven't looked into having it professionally stripped and redone. I probably should. I can't imagine a red or blue table in our dining room, though. I'll have to think about that one.

Jterrilynn - The chairs that you posted are kinda cute...if only they didn't have spindles in the back, I'd almost say perfect....(spindles are just too country for me)...I agree that they need to have a low back and that is exactly why I am having such a hard time finding any. I have been keeping an eye out on criagslist as well as local thrift stores on the rare occasions that I have time but there seems to be nothing but old country kitchen type chairs...nothing that would work for me. If only I could be so lucky. Clairbouyant - Yes, I did consider a banquette but just don't have the time to build anything right now and I stink at sewing so thats out too. I've been dealing with some computer problems lately so needless to say...I still haven't found what I'm looking for just yet but will definatley post back when I do....in the meantime....I'm still hoping to log in one day to the perfect chair! Someone suggested that I look for restaurant chairs because they are usually smaller....just wish I knew a good source. Ever search I try just ends up showing the same expensive chairs I've already been finding. Ugh....so frustrating.

A couple of things to know about true milk paint (powder that you mix with water) and chalk paint - neither one of them will add any protection to the piece on their own - they will both need to be top coated with a protective finish. Adding that protective finish will alter the color of your piece - for red it will darken the color significantly. The most often used topcoat for both is wax which will give a beautiful hand rubbed finish but doesn't offer a lot of protection. As you will be using this as an end table/charging station keep that in mind. As you are going over raw wood and not a previously finished piece it is not likely you will see chipping of the milk paint - possible but not likely. True milk paint when applied will go on very thin ( it is water after all) and will show variations in the color on the piece. Not a bad thing if you expect it. If you intend to sand some of the paint back (shabby look) both chalk paint and milk paint are super easy to sand back and don't gum up your sandpaper. Chalk paint is more 'sticky' and primer is considered optional. With true milk paint you wouldn't want to prime - need to keep the wood pores open for the paint. General Finishes Milk Paint (premixed in a can and not a true milk paint) behaves more like 'regular' paint. Adding a protective topcoat (if you choose to) will not alter the color. Finish is a satin look. Check out the General Finishes site for lots of tips and ideas for application and glazing. You can also search for a dealer in your area - there are lots of them. For GF Milk Paint and regular trim/cabinet paint like BM/SW/etc you really should use a primer to ensure a trouble free finish.

I have 2 parsons chairs with my antique DR table. I bought floor length fitted slipcovers for them so the legs don't show.

I don't think it's the upholstery and nailheads that clash. I think it might be the visual "weight" of the dark chair legs next to the turned legs of the table. As gracies said, a skirt on the chairs would ground them and draw attention to the table rather than the chairs. But I don't know quite how you'd be able to match the exiating fabric. Maybe a subtle contrast with the skirt?

This is similar to the pattern of my slipcovers. I had purchased 2 chairs from The Great Indoors that just had simple white cushions on them.

I know the table in the link I've included below is not at all like your table, but for some reason as soon as I started reading your post I thought of Shelli's Alamode blog. She seems to pretty much favor more contemporary pieces, but I like how she mixes things up. Check out her dining room and see if that helps you at all.

Also, I don't know that you need to tone down the silver of the nailheads, and I've used this product so can't give testimony as to if/how well it would work, but I've noticed people here and on blogs using something called Rub 'N Buff to change hardware colors and such.

Oh, and here's her kitchen table in which she's used a dark table with some white slipcovered chairs.

tammy518: Thank you so much for all of this great info.! I love the blog you referred me to and that is a great looking dining room. I love the use of two different styles of slipcovers. Thank you for the Rub N' Buff recommendation, too....I had not heard of that.

Salymc123, you're very welcome. I'm glad the info I posted was helpful to you. I just noticed there was a typo where I said I'd used Rub 'N Buff. I meant say that I haven't used it but I've seen pretty results when people have posted about it before.
