Bare root rose having black spots

I have put this bare root rose (Friesia) in a big pot. It has been raining since a last few days. There are a few leaves budding out but as you can see that there are black spots already developing. I read that till the leaves are out fully there should be no application of any insecticide or fungicide. But looks like I need to do something here.

Also I am a bit concerned that leaves came out so early (About a month after planting). It is still one more month of winter in Sydney.

So should I trim that cane off? There are a few more spots in the other cane.

I would trim off the dark top of the cane on the right, otherwise it looks good. Hopefully the early leaves can make it another month till Spring.

Yes, trim off any dead wood. You may lose those early leaves if you get another freeze but the roses should still be OK and leaf out again. If you know it's going to freeze can you move the pot into a garage or shed to protect it some?

I used to have The Alnwick Rose. I've attempted growing this rose twice and in conclusion, there are three things that I don't like about it: 1) Most of the time, the scent is not always present. A huge let down. 2) the flower form is small and the petals scatter quickly. 3) I don't like the colour - it fades quickly to a glistering white/ pale pink colour. The only good thing about this rose is that it repeats quite fast.

I order bareroots for last week of March, with the idea of getting them in the ground the first week of April. Remember, bareroots aren't planted in spring, but the end of winter. If they don't get snowed on at least once, they are planted too late. I wouldn't plan anything different for this year, but the beginning of May is getting into territory where if they honestly can't be planted, they go into pots. They have to get into dirt and start growing or they won't survive the challenges of the next year.

If all canes have gone wrinkled it doesn't look good, but if some part of the cane still are all right it's worth some extra effort. Spray them with water as often as you can, keep soil wet. Protect them from direct sunlight with at fabric or semi-translucent plastic (white or gray), and keep spraing with water. Before you go to bed, focus on the first star you see that night and wish for cloudy, rainy weather ;-)
