Should I have the bare-root roses sent a bit earlier?

I have May 1st on my order. With the way this spring is shaping up, I think that is going to be late for bare-root planting. The next ten days are predicted to be in the mid-50's to some mid-60's even. Anyone adjusting their shipping dates? Looking at the spring we're having, when should I request mine for? Thanks!

I plant bareroots in mid to late April, and would stay with those shipping times this spring.

I order bareroots for last week of March, with the idea of getting them in the ground the first week of April.

Remember, bareroots aren't planted in spring, but the end of winter. If they don't get snowed on at least once, they are planted too late. I wouldn't plan anything different for this year, but the beginning of May is getting into territory where if they honestly can't be planted, they go into pots. They have to get into dirt and start growing or they won't survive the challenges of the next year.

It sounds like you've done a good job of researching and tried to correct some of your mistakes. We all do things we shouldn't when we first start out (and even later when we THINK we know what to do). I did the same thing you did on my first rose - planted it first and then read about what I should have done....The fresh manure is not a good thing. If applied too thickly it can burn the roots. Make sure that you keep your rose well watered, but not too much water until your rose leafs out more fully. Clay soil retains water so don't drown your rose until the rose develops roots and foliage that will actually need that water. Try and keep the wind away from the tender new growth until it develops a root system. A wind screen can help. Usually roots and leaves develop together, but when the bareroot has been feeding on itself in the bag(instead of the nutrients in the soil), the growth will be even more susceptible to drying out. I can't tell you if your rose will survive. They can be really tough some times. In my case on my first rose I got so worried I ended up digging it back up and doing it right. That rose then lasted a good 22 years. Good luck btw.....Maryl

Eric, if you go to Pickering's website, they have instructions on planting bare root roses. Follow their instrucions and you can't go wrong. A very important instruction is to hill up bare roots with soil (10") for winter protection and drying, which is sometimes forgotten. There has always been a planting instruction sheet in my orders, so I'm surprised too that there wasn't one in your order.

Yes, trim off any dead wood. You may lose those early leaves if you get another freeze but the roses should still be OK and leaf out again. If you know it's going to freeze can you move the pot into a garage or shed to protect it some?

Dingo, I have studied the Edmunds and Austin catalogs, but the own root, bare root rose availability, though seen by me, did not register. I believe the deep rooted assumption, since I have been growing roses for just short of 50 years, that bare root roses are always grafted roses, kicked in. Own root container grown roses are still a wonder to me, yet alone own root, bare root roses! Thank you for reinforcing a new concept to me. Rifis, thank you for bringing this to my attention, I did read that and thought it was possibly a misprint. Since the bareroots are primarily grafted on vigorous rootstocks, I thought own root roses were not husky enough to take the fall harvesting, cleaning, and winter cold storage as a, say multiflora rootstock rose can, and be sold as bare root roses, just like grafted roses. Now my question is, "Do they perform as well as container grown roses?"

I usual plant in April here. That's when the soil is workable normally. My soil never really froze this year though so I could probably plant now but my roses aren't here yet so I'll do it when they come.

I planted a bunch of them this weekend. My other order is arriving end March, only because I had something personal going on which will prevent me from planting until then so I asked Regan to hold my order. I'm not too keen on this, since it's been so warm here but nothing I can do about that.

My first few orders were in mid April, but mid March actually works better most years. If the ground is still frozen--it means that the roses will keep in the garage until the ground thaws.
