Comments (36)Great post! We are in a similar situation. We have a two year old and four year old and plan to have one more child. We plan for this to be our house until our kids head off to college so we had many of the same concerns in planning. After initially planning all the bedrooms upstairs, we changed to a story and a half plan. We have the master downstairs, with one other bedroom (future nursery). We have two bedrooms upstairs for our boys with a bathroom and enclosed loft (this forum scared me too much about an open loft area!). The upstairs loft will function as a play/homework space for the boys in the future. If we wanted to have all three kids upstairs, we could close it off to make it a third bedroom if we wanted. Our plan is open concept with a playroom off of our great room, which will also function as a den/guest room as the kids get older. It has sliding barn doors that can keep it open to the great room or it can also be closed off (to hide all those toys!). We included a large mudroom off the garage with five lockers/cubbies. We also have a drop zone/desk between that area and the kitchen for keeping school papers, mail, etc. organized. We've opted for hardwood throughout the great room/kitchen/dining. Our builder is doing some distressing to it with the staining process so hopefully any additional wear and tear by our boys and golden retriever will only add to the look....See MoreRug size for family room and few other ?s for our new house!
Comments (8)Bosegirl, you are sending mixed messages!! "I don't want to rush like we did with our first home" and "We need a kitchen table ASAP". I would use your old kitchen table for now or put it in the dining room for now and eat there. Nothing wrong with using a card table for a while! I don't think a glass kitchen table is unsafe. Make sure it is a thick high quality glass. I had a glass table with a metal frame when my kids were little. For your toddler get her room set up as soon as possible. Spend time doing this instead of looking for a new kitchen table! Once she has her own room then you will have better control of her sleeping routine. Do you have someone to take her outside or to a park while you get stuff done? Area rug - a little big is better than too small. Use one of the online room planners to lay out your room and furniture and then lay out different sized rugs. Is the furniture in the room? Use blue painters tape or old sheets to outline the size of rug and look at it for a few days....See MoreIs speed oven used often in families with young children?
Comments (6)I can't answer your question as to whether you will cook...only you can answer that. I also don't know what types of foods you plan to cook/bake. I will say, though, that your work situation is not that unusual (at least to those of us in the DC area). With the exception of the first 10 weeks after each of my children was born, I have worked full time also, getting home around 7:00pm. Yes, I cooked and still do! B/c I get home so late, I use a lot of per-cooked meats or I cook over the weekend & freeze/refrigerate for the week. I have only had a convection oven + MW but, a speed oven would have made the job so much faster! Personally, I think that if you want to start cooking yourself & your cooking lends itself to it, you should seriously consider getting a speed oven rather than two convection ovens. You will need to have things cook as quickly as possible. Remember, that speed ovens can usually be used as a regular oven as well, so you're not giving up a second oven...you will still have two ovens PLUS speed cook capability when needed.
