The wiring may not be conventional because the power or the light circuits are not coming into the switch boxes and some creative wiring was done. The easiest way to figure this out is to first disassemble all switches and lights to access the wiring. Find out which wires in each box have power and make a diagram. Next shut off the circuit so you can check each wires resistance/continuity. This will allow you to determine which cable is feeding where. With a voltmeter/DVM set to OHMS pick the first wire to check and make sure there is no continuity. With the meter still connected to the wire go to the light or switch box you think the wire is running to and touch the same colored wire to ground (this is assuming it hasn't changed color by a connection somewhere else). The meter will read close to zero ohms when the wire is touched to ground (some wires may read a low resistance if it is connected to the light bulb so you may want to remove them). Do this for each wire until you have a diagram showing where all wires are going/coming from. Then is is a matter of having the wire supplying power go to the common of one switch. The two other wires in that same switch box must get to the other switch. The other switch will have the two wires coming in from the first switch and then the wire going to the lights connect to the common of switch 2. It now is a matter of connecting the wires through all the boxes to achieve this configuration. If you cannot figure this out then a picture of where all the wires go to the switches and lights. I moved the switch but could not eliminate the old box that held the old switch. There was power coming in and a feed to another point in the house so I removed the switch and used that wire to get power to the new location. I then covered the box with a full plate. All the other connections worked well. Thanks

I started to write up some steps, but if you do not even know how to operate the meter find someone who does. "I know that normally the red means "traveler" " Or switched hot. 120 V is not all that dangerous if you have dry hands and shoes on, but you WILL know if you touch it by accident. If you do not have any understanding of wiring, get someone who does. Ether hire an electrician to figure out what to do, or an experienced friend willing to lend a hand. The most likely thing is that one of the blacks is 'always on' and feeds the others, or when there where two switches was the 'other' switched hot. The red was most likely on the other screw of the switch and is a 'switched hot' feeding a light or receptacle. The problem is that you have to figure out a lot of what is what with the power on. If you want to figure it out, find your power source FIRST. It could be in the ceiling box or the switch box. After that, draw a diagram or look up a diagram online of how the wiring should be for your situation. This allows you to understand what is going on. I get confused with a few wiring schemes (usually 3 ways) and like to look at diagrams to get a grasp of what is going on. Once you have it figured out, then try to get it to work. It is more than likely you have a 3 way switch when dealing with the red which is always hot. That means your power source might be in a different switch box completely. The 3 way would be for the light, and it sounds like a separate hot is there for the fan, which could be capped off and discontinued. You wouldnt be able to use the dimmer for that light if it is indeed a 3 way circuit. 3 way circuits require special dimmers that communicate with each other. You cant dim with one side and expect someone to turn the light on on the other side and have safe passage in the room. The simple way of finding the power source is unwiring the hots in the switches and fixtures involved, leave the hots exposed and not touching anything or each other. Then turn the power back on and take a quality non-contact volt tester and find the live hot.
