I transplant almost everyday. There is of course a "best" time to plant everything. When that time is not available we still plant, very carefully. Most important is to do what you can to minimise transplant shock. I always maintain as much as possible of the original rootball. Always plant into native soil without fertilizing at planting time. If the soil does not drain well I will plant on a raised berm. If the soil needs amending I will only amend with finished compost and never less than a four foot square area,before planting. The transplant will always be watered directly on the original root ball for the first few weeks to allow time for the roots to grow into the native soil. Linda Your original message takes me back to the first year I moved here and there wasnt even much grass in the yard as yet. Anyway as I was standing in my yard in comes this hummer and circled my head , maybe my red hat attracted him. I went straight out and bought my first feeder and hung it. Previously to that I was wondering if I was going to have hummers, question answered. From there it was a matter of building up what hummer habitat I could in my small lot size yard. Last summer had evolved to my best hummer summer ever. During august migration was at its peak and I was blessed with around 40 hummers. So here I am living in a subdivion of small lots and it can be done, it just takes time.

you're probably fine starting some, you wouldn't want to plant for 3-4 more weeks yet. And there are plenty of people who would be happy to share if you ask around (I live an hour west of Dayton if you get this far south) or a small nursery (not a big box store) near you will probably sell a 6-pack even of heirlooms for 2-3 dollars.

Hello bigeric, First let me say that EarthBox has a fantastic forum located at www.earthbox.com. The folks are helpful and lots of fun! I have 25 EB's and several other SWC's and plain old containers. In your zone it should not be too lat to plant tomatoes -but- check the days to maturity on the plants you purchase. After checking the DTM check your average usual first frost date and then decide which tomato plants to purchase. I use ProMix BX in my EB's and add in extra Perlite. I have found that extra Perlite keeps the ProMix from staying too wet. GardenWeb also has a Container Forum which will be great for your new EB garden. Cheers, DL
