Growing Tomatoes

Am I too late?

Just moved to a new house and wanting to plant some tomatoes. I ordered some EarthBoxes since I don't have a garden space and expect them to arrive by next weekend. (fingers crossed)

Anyways, it has been raining for about the past two to two and a half weeks...nasty drizzle for most of the day. Temps are in the low 60s during the day and for the most part high 40s at night. There were a couple morns I noticed it was 43 when going to work at 6am but for the most part around 47. Forecast is half and half next week.

The local nursery has some tomatoes, both indeterminate and determinate that are about 1-1/2 foot high.

So the big question....is it too late to plant tomatoes or should I just go for it and see what happens? I suppose I would be better off with determinates this late eh?

Also, aside from Pro-Mix, could someone recommend a suitable sub that is commercially available instead of having to make? I've used search a lot but come up with a lot of varying answers.

I have 3 earthboxes coming and plan on getting 5 or 6 tomato plants. I may try an indeterminate in its own box just for grins.

I am also going to get another couple planters about the same size of earthboxes that I'll plant with something else. Don't know what though. Any ideas of other veggies? I was thinking maybe lettuce, beets, or maybe some chinese cabbage (I like kimchi).

I guess I'm just way behind and trying to catch up.

Hello bigeric,

First let me say that EarthBox has a fantastic forum located at www.earthbox.com. The folks are helpful and lots of fun! I have 25 EB's and several other SWC's and plain old containers. In your zone it should not be too lat to plant tomatoes -but- check the days to maturity on the plants you purchase. After checking the DTM check your average usual first frost date and then decide which tomato plants to purchase. I use ProMix BX in my EB's and add in extra Perlite. I have found that extra Perlite keeps the ProMix from staying too wet.

Mrs Tlc, like Amber said cucumbers and zucchini grow fast, try to find varieties that take the shortest amount of time to mature. And later in the season you have to pay attention about the pickleworm and when it is coming. If you are vigilant and look for signs of pest or disease, you can be very successful with these veggies. I planted zucchini and cucumbers at the same time and zucchini are already producing a bunch while the cucumbers have fruit but are not ready yet. Silvia

you're probably fine starting some, you wouldn't want to plant for 3-4 more weeks yet. And there are plenty of people who would be happy to share if you ask around (I live an hour west of Dayton if you get this far south) or a small nursery (not a big box store) near you will probably sell a 6-pack even of heirlooms for 2-3 dollars.

If you're planting vegetables, there is almost always something you can plant in a particular month. This chart is for Southern Ca., but I don't think it would vary that much where you live. Green beans are super easy to grow, and you can plant a tomato if you get one that's already started - like a 4 in. pot. It depends on what you like to eat, as well. You are running out of time for seeding. If you want to do that, do it now. Go ahead and scalp and seed. That usually takes some planning and time. Maybe put off the overseeding until next fall and see where TLC gets you. In any case, fall is a great time to apply broadleaf killer so you will still have time in October when the new seedlings can handle it. Make sure you fertilize at least a couple of times this fall. If you have never done one, a soil test is helpful to guide you. And make sure you apply crabgrass preventer in the spring. A 2nd application may be needed 6-8 weeks later to get you through the summer. Use GDDtracker for that: http://gddtracker.net/?model=7&offset=0 I suspect you can get that lawn looking great without overseeding since you likely have KBG already. Fertilize well. Most stop watering in fall but make sure you do if mother nature doesn't. apply broadleaf herbicide. You may need one specific for clover (triclopyr) if you really want to get rid of that.
