Canning food with interruptions
Comments (5)I bought pickle crisp to use this year. Last year was the first year I canned potatoes, and I thought they turned out great even though I didn't have the pickle crisp. I was really pleased with the taste, texture, and convenience of having them ready to use. I'm using the pickle crisp and we'll see how much it improves things. I appreciate all the advice. I now have a refrigerator full of peeled and sliced, diced, or chunked potatoes sitting in water with ascorbic acid. All are ready to boil and process tomorrow. It makes it so much easier that I can prep these ahead of time because I still have about 50-70 pounds of red pontiac potatoes on the porch waiting on me to wash and peel. I also have 8 cups of blackberries mixed with 4 cups of sugar to make blackberry preserves (Ball Complete) in the refrigerator. I've got to get these all out of the way because the tomatoes are starting to come in. The time crunch wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have anything else to do! lol....See MoreHearing Loss and Interrupting
Comments (12)Hi sweeby - I lost total hearing in my left ear as the result of a brain tumor. It is a daily struggle to participate in conversations, but I work really hard at trying to listen when someone is speaking to me, I give them my undivided attention. I do have to ask people to repeat, and most of the time it isn't a problem. There are many times that I am not aware someone is talking to me, so they literally need to be in my face LOL It is obvious that you are really trying to work with your hubby, and I see your frustration. I know my hubby has to constantly be aware when he is speaking to me and it is alot of work for him as well. Sounds like maybe your hubby is in denial? Especially having profound hearing loss at only 50. Wish he would go to an audiologist because there are so many wonderful hearing devices available. Some so small that you can't see them in the ear. It has been 8 years since I lost my hearing and there has not been anything on the market that would help me. My hearing nerve was removed. Anyway, there is a brand new device that was just approved and I will be getting mine next week. I am very excited!! I know it will not replicate what I had pre-brain tumor, but it will sure make life easier for me and everyone around me. Hang in there!! matti...See MoreStorm, and anyone had travel plans interrupted
Comments (5)Our weekend was to be going into Pittsburgh for a day at the Strip district, dinner and the Steelers game, we had to cancel it because of Irene. My boss is in NY and I needed to have access to my computers to check on how to get him out of there and to handle a few of my concierge clients from my travel business. I had a couple dozen students scheduled for Amtrak trips from the east back to Johnstown and a couple that has been in London for the past 2 weeks was heading yesterday. Got everyone all straightened away and settled in to watch the game on tv!...See MoreInterrupted and Delayed Spring Here
Comments (16)Same thing here in central Ohio - warm March, chilly early April (with dusting of snow, lows down to about 24F), last half of April shaping up to be modestly milder than usual (frost advisory last night, but I think we escaped with a low near 40). Gardening life as usual in the Midwest. Brunneras were set back only minimally by the early April cold and are still flowering. I'm looking forward to seeing what the self-sown Hellebores are going to do when they (eventually) bloom. Can't see paying big bucks for fancy Hellebore hybrids, but the cheapies have been nice. The 14 Campanula persicifolias I set out last weekend avoided what could have been a disaster. I had covered them with a lightweight frost cloth to avoid wilt because they were transplanted on a warm sunny afternoon. My black Lab decided the cloth was a new dog bed and stepped onto it; we were able to warn her off before she lay down and squashed the plants....See MoreUser
