What color would you paint the cabinets?

The mountain place we have an offer on will be getting mostly cosmetic changes. The kitchen cabinets are honey oak that I hate as well as Formica countertops. I plan to paint cabinets and replace countertops with a honed black granite. The adjoining great room will get new furniture. I was planning on the following colors, green couch, existing pecan colored leather chairs, rug is black background with green, red and cream design.

oh and I'm also adding a wine bar on an adjacent wall in the dining area. I was hoping to do quarter sawn oak cabinets for the bar with a quartzite countertop similar to what is shown in mood board. I was thinking green for the cabinets but am I over doing the green? The kitchen is not open to the living room but is visible from certain angles.

Yes we will definitely be considering laminate countertops, I think I was giddy from my cold (sick this weekend) when I thought of granite - after finding out it would be a minimum of $6000 installed for this kitchen! Considering the context - an inexpensive townhouse - granite would probably just be silly, though it does seem like a prerequisite for resale around here, and we do not consider this our forever home so i do need to keep that in mind. Another option that just occurred to me is DIY concrete countertop - I remember seeing one on a blog some time ago and it was really nice (and very cheap!). I have no idea how that works with the sink cutout etc but I'll have to look up more info, has anyone here done a concrete countertop? The cabinets - they could be a lot better, but after pricing even middle-road Ikea cabinets, and considering the major demolition that would be needed, I am not sure if it's worth it to replace them. Perhaps all they need is a really good stripping and sanding and proper repainting. Our bathroom cabinets have MDF doors, that's why I assumed these were too, but they are wood - just not high quality wood.

I think I'd wait to decide on the cabs until after the wallpaper is down also. your cab pulls/knobs don't have to match the faucet. you might get them in ORB to tie in with the black of the table. If your mom likes a fan over the table there are great new ones at HD for 100.00 or less. The wiring is already there so it shouldn't be hard or expensive to change it. they come with remotes too. If you/she changes the cooktop to a black one that would tie in the black also. I'm frugal also and wouldn't change other appliances if they are still working. If you paint the cabs black with a black table, bench etc and wood floors it will be too much dark unless you go with a light wood floor. that would still be too dark for me. There are cabs painted white, cream, green, blue, yellow, grey, etc on this forum. They look great. you all might decide on a color rather than black or a wood stain. I'd try to figure that out before painting the walls. If you keep them as they are (look nice to me) or a light wood tone then tan walls might be too much in the 'beigey - boring' category. Think about the cabs being a cream color with dark wood floor, black appliances and that granite.

So much depends on the style and aesthetic that you have/desire for the rest of your home. You probably don't want a series of unconnected or competitive visual styles. If you have neutral floors (wood, for example) and your base and window trim are painted, then painted cabinets would look wonderful. On the other hand, if you have colorful tile floors and/or the strong use of natural finished woods elsewhere in your house, you may want a neutral looking bank of cabinets for harmony. That said, there's nothing that says all of the cabinets have to be finished identically. A accent color for a bank of cabinets contrasted with neutral cabinets could be striking. Pick your cabinets; thereafter pick your counter tops and splashes. Good luck with your choices!

General Finishes gel stain is super easy. I've slapped it straight on oak cabinets that had been finished (even on that fake plastic side). Some very slight sanding beforehand. Make sure to search on gardenweb. There are lots of picture and directions. Also, very easy to touch up if necessary. The only potential issue are the white appliances that may stick out with darker cabinets. Here's GF gray gel stain. Will be doing some remodeling if the budget allows what we want to end up with. We met with builder the other day at the house and he wants some more definitive thoughts in order to give us a number. I dislike the cabinets but replacing is out of the budget, so I'm trying to show him some options so he can say whether it is may or may not work.

Hubby wants to stain cabinets I want to paint. Builder wanted some options on paint or stain to determine labor costs. It will also affect what happens if the seller counters our offer. We have X amount to buy and remodel, if the cost of the remodeling added to what the seller counters is over budget I want to know so we can either scale back remodel or just move on and start house hunting again.

Does the kitchen get much light? I think a nice cream would look great with you back counters. Seems there is plenty of color going on elsewhere.

Aktillery9, now that you mention it, this kitchen doesn't get much light. The other side of the house has vaulted ceilings with skylights, but not in this room. Maybe cream is a better option.

Annette, I'm sorry- I didn't mean to ignore your post.

i went gray/green with my cabinets in north facing kitchen. Wood ceiling & dark floors(darker than I thought they'd be- DIY) so I went with cream walls.

I --almost-- wish I had gone with cream.

i love your mood board & that granite for wine bar is gorgeous!!

Annette, do you already own the rug? If not, Since you have darker furniture it would brighten things with a lighter rug.

Are you keeping all of the wood (ceiling and walls) as is or painting any of it?

We are keeping the wood everywhere, too expensive to replace. Hubby likes the idea of a milk paint on some walls to lighten up and add some interest.

That's not my sofa. I have that same sofa in a wheat color but am having it recovered in the green.

That first pic would do me just fine! I'm even thinking the light countertop would be nice. I can still do the green countertop on the bar as it is on another wall.
