Looking for experiences of someone who did custody case without lawyer

I have a relative who is fighting (In New jersey) for primary custody of a 5 year old. They are scheduled for court this week. They were never married. They had one court date where mediation was ordered. The mediation was a waste because the mediator allowed the father to talk and talk leaving the mom once again overwhelmed and intimidated. This week is the first court date since the failed mediation. The key issue is where the child will live when school starts. She starts K this fall. Mom and Dad live about 45 minutes apart. Both schools are fairly equal, mom's might be a little better. Both are full day. Mom has enough $ for about 4 hours of an atty. The atty she had a free consult with had told her that at the first date the judge would order mediation, so there would be little point to paying atty to go. She was right. The father has consulted an atty, but also did not bring one to the first date, he may bring one this week.Mom earns too much to get a free atty, but not enough to pay $300/hr and she has poor credit so a loan is not possible, plus she couldn't really make payments.

We are wondering what to expect at this court date. If neither party brings an atty what will happen? The possibility of a home study (? or something) was mentioned, but mom has zero $ to pay for it. Dad should have the $ , but did recently lose his job (he was earning 50% more than mom) Will the judge ask questions? Will the parents question each other or be asked to make a statement? She is coming over tonight to prepare, but we have no idea what will happen. Does anybody know?

He should have the $ for an atty since he is living rent free in the mom's condo which is in pre-foreclosure and mom does not feel safe as the neighborhood has deteriorated ( for example registered sex offender lives in same building.) She has no idea what he spends his $ on since he pays no rent or utilities (don't know why they haven't been shut off for non-pay, but she still gets the bills so we know he isn't paying). As of late last week no atty has filed an appearance for this court date. Dad lost his job last month (he has spotty employment record in the computer field, but was at this job 1.5 years) Mom has same job for over 10 years. Mom is renting a condo in a much nicer area, closer to her job. Child spends weekdays primarily with father because child refused to go to new day care up here. She was getting stomach aches etc, so mom agreed to just go pick her up 2 nights a week but return her there for the work day. Dad keeps saying she should stay in her environment, but truth is she will start kindergarten, so change is coming anyway.

Any tips from someone who has gone without attorney for custody? btw, he is not a bad DAD, he loves his kid, he is just a .....
