Redoing shower - PEX and new valve?
Comments (1)The only PEX connections that I'd trust in an enclosed stud bay are expansion connections. I use a tool to expand the ends of the tubing, slip the expanded PEX over the fitting, then the memory of the PEX causes it to contract, sealing around the fitting. But that's me. Sweating copper isn't difficult. It should't be a worry since you have a contractor doing the work. As to adding shutoff valves, if you want no-kidding valves that are independent from the valve, then you can certainly do that. I prefer full-port, 90-degree throw valves for water supply on/off valves. They look similar to this: As an alternative you can also look for a valve with "stops". Stops are shutoff valves that are integral to the valve itself. If you ever need to work on the valve or replace the cartridge, you remove the trim cover, use a screwdriver to close the stops (one hot, one cold), and that shuts water off to the valve. Yes, a lot of times you are paying for trend and style. If your current valve and trim kit are fine, you can simply refurbish/update the valve with a repair kit if they are available for your valve. Comments (8)Thanks for the info on the tub-- we remodeled master bath about 4-5 yrs ago in home we owned but rented to our son--we neeed to find a smaller tub for space that the acrylic soaker was in-- ordered it at Ferguson's and think it was AS--was a fiberglass tub--not my favorite but wasn't that expensive and fit the space... Maybe if my husband sees there are no nice small tubs he will agree to the shower upgrade We are familiar with aging in place stuff--house we bought in TX has roll in showers in both downstairs bathrooms and some other features... but thanks for the link This shows the entrance into part of bath with tub and shower the area just to left of pocket door is linen closet--then the small shower--the toilet is on that exterior wall-- I think there might be room to extend the side of the shower closest to toilet a foot or so which can make a difference in such small space...but it would make toilet sort of lopsided on the wall spacing......See MoreBudget bathroom redo question
Comments (17)Removing tub and making larger shower is not an option. They are across the room from each other. Making shower larger would require moving toilet and that's definitely not in the budget. I do not use if often, but when I want to use it, I love that I have it. I don't have a lot of time for it, but I do love taking a bath now and then. Even if money were no object removing tub is not something I would do. I would be willing to replace it with a soaking tub. I don't really care about the jacuzzi part. I don't even turn it on because I like bubbles. So, I could look at a soaking tub, but I'm pretty sure that's just not going to be in the budget. Unfortunately, there isn't much room in the budget at all. I'm not crazy about the reglazing option. I don't think I'd be happy with that (and I know DH wouldn't). I think I'd rather leave it as is and work around it. I can look into cost of a soaking tub, but I think I'm going to have to make this work. Hopefully, my tile choice can make it not stand out so badly. What if I buy extra tile for the tub decking (which is not very big). Then if I could change it out later, I would have the tile to redo the surround. Or maybe when I could change it out I could use a slab of something that matches tile on floor? Comments (20)Thanks to all of you who weighed in on this! tibbrix- our bathroom is pretty spacious but wondering if that wouldn't get cold in the winter. Its on the north side of our house and would probably have to redo our floor tile to work it. So I'm not sure that's an option. lizzierobbin- the chance of getting my DH to squeegee the glass after every shower is slim to none. And the fact it's a pretty large neoangle shower with three glass panels doesn't help matters. Although, I would do it. graywings- I like those but my bathroom is more of a farmhouse style with a claw foot tub so I'm thinking it wouldn't fit the style of the room. I am going to look into the acrylic bases and hope that we can find one that will fit the exact footprint of our existing shower....See More

7 years agoHere is our 30" acrylic one with 6" squares and pencil liner Glass block window is bouncing a lot of light in there but you get the idea.
