I'd go with the white toilet and sink, but I'd think a bit more about the vanity color. The non-white/whitish things will then be the tub, the walls, the vanity and the accessories. I wouldn't commit to a solid dark brown vanity until first considering the whole color scheme of the non-white elements.

I don't know the difference befween a vanity and a counter, but dark brown will show every speck of dust or powder, and every dried water droplet.

Personally, I love white and off whites together. I think the almond would look very good.

You could have the tub reglazed in white, I've heard it's cost effective and works great.

I used General Finishes Java gel stain on my oak cabinets. They actually make my old counters look surprisingly good! Who knew?

I have a white tub, cream tiles. They actually look ok together. I think when we moved in 11 years ago, it bothered me. But now I actually embrace the white and cream combo.

I'd stick with the white toilet & sink & reglaze the tub, like Lukki suggested. If the tub is any more than 10 years old you'll probably never be able to get a perfect match anyway....almond, linen, bone, etc, the companies change the names and the colors themselves.

The painted vanity should look fine if you do it right. I painted my ugly grey laminate vanity black with a faux wood grain, and it looks great and is wearing well.

shermann - by vanity, I mean the cabinets. I'll be painting those dark brown. The counter on top is currently laminate and will be replaced with a light/white granite.

hudsonleigh - you're so right about not being able to match the almond tub anyway.

I haven't heard very good things about glazing tubs. Do you think it really does work. It is a jacuzzi tub and doesn't get used very often, so maybe it would be ok?

Bee - thanks! Your bathrooms look great. Maybe this can work for me! Oh, believe me doing anything to my cabinets will not help the counters. It is old ugly beige laminate. It's got to go!

jamies - every bathroom I love has white fixtures, dark brown vanity, cream or white tile, and white granite. I will be trying to reproduce this look without replacing the tub. The only walls to be tiled will be the shower, not the entire bathroom. So, most of the walls are not tiled.

Thank you everyone for your input. I am feeling better that the tub won't look out of place. It is the master bath, only seen by DH and myself. So, even if not perfect, it will be SO much better than what is there now that really can't even be used because of crumbling shower.

If anyone else has an opinion either way or has done this, would love to hear it.

I don't know about jacuzzi tubs (are they made of the same stuff - cast iron?), but my cousin had her ancient purple bathtub reglazed white. It was beautiful, and showed no more than ordinary signs of wear when she moved a few years later. It was not cheap, but not too costly, either.

I would get the white fixtures you want and get tile with almond in it to pull in the tub.

It would be penny wise and pound foolish to keep that almond tub. Especially when replacing it is actually so cheap. You can buy a good whirlpool tub starting at around $600. If you would prefer just a soaking tub, they start at around $300. Reglazing will start at around $400 and go up from there and it is extremely problematic to know if you are picking someone who actually knows what they are doing with reglazing. It doesn't work at all well in about 80% of the cases.

I agree with live_wire. I hate to discourage you, but I think that almond tub is going to taunt you every time you walk into your new bathroom.

We just finished a minor update of our guest bath: new flooring, toilet, granite top, faucet. We kept our cherry vanity and the tub, because we never use the tub and it seemed extravagant to replace it, and my now 92-year old DF put in the white tile when we moved in 13 years ago and I wanted to keep it.

We spent thousands just on this small update. Your project sounds more expensive than ours. I'm very happy with our new bath but the old white tub does not match the new white fixtures. At first, I was very upset - so much money and my vision was "off". I use two white Peacock Alley shower curtains and mostly keep them closed to minimize the difference, and, like Beekeeperswife, I now like the creamier white with the new starker white, but I know I would absolutely hate it if it were almond.

I would make budget adjustments elsewhere. In fact, when we do our master bath, we're removing the jacuzzi and making a larger shower. Since you say you seldom use it, is that an option?

live_wire has a very good point. Tubs can be had for relatively little money, and as long as you're doing the work you may as well do it right the first time and not have to deal with it again later. Maybe you can cut back the budget a little in other areas?

I personally think that if you leave the tub almond you will ultimately be unhappy and want to change it out later, which will then be more work.

I have no first hand experience with re-glazing, but I have heard that the way they do it makes a good solid bond that won't chip for years.

Removing tub and making larger shower is not an option. They are across the room from each other. Making shower larger would require moving toilet and that's definitely not in the budget.

I do not use if often, but when I want to use it, I love that I have it. I don't have a lot of time for it, but I do love taking a bath now and then. Even if money were no object removing tub is not something I would do.

I would be willing to replace it with a soaking tub. I don't really care about the jacuzzi part. I don't even turn it on because I like bubbles. So, I could look at a soaking tub, but I'm pretty sure that's just not going to be in the budget. Unfortunately, there isn't much room in the budget at all.

I'm not crazy about the reglazing option. I don't think I'd be happy with that (and I know DH wouldn't). I think I'd rather leave it as is and work around it.

I can look into cost of a soaking tub, but I think I'm going to have to make this work. Hopefully, my tile choice can make it not stand out so badly.

What if I buy extra tile for the tub decking (which is not very big). Then if I could change it out later, I would have the tile to redo the surround. Or maybe when I could change it out I could use a slab of something that matches tile on floor? Or try to find another granite slab that would go with counter?

Lots of people have used Kohler's Archer tub and are happy with it. Since your installation is not a tub shower, you can do a drop in and the skirt and deck can be an inexpensive tile. HD even has it on sale right now for $302! If you need to cut your budget, use cheaper tile for a field tile and just use the more decorative tiles as features, like a band as a listello, or randomly scattered through the field.

Thanks, LWO. That is very inexpensive. I will have to measure my tub tonight and see if they are similar in size. Would not want to go smaller than I have now.
