Comments (5)I really promise you that you would not want to walk around anyplace near here, barefooted. What's grass? I haven't seen it for some time now. Animals were restless last night. First the inside ones, they didn't calm down until after one in the morning and I was getting a few hours of fitful sleep until one of the outside alarms started dinging. Over, and over, and over. I drags myself to a window to see what is setting it off, and it's a herd of deer......first down the drive (prolly nibbling on whatever they could find in the way of ornamentals hanging over the stone walls), and then back up the drive. Ding.......one deer......ding.......two deer........ding three deer.........ding,ding,ding turns around and goes back. LOL. Ding, ding, ding..........................................ding. Changes mind and goes the other way again. I just get up and take intravenous coffee. Stuff is still encased in at least 3/4 inch of ice. I have been bargaining with the Gods to let the power lines hold since the fix two days ago, as each forecast of a dusting of snow with no accumulation turns into a mini whiteout. I am thankful I have had enough math to work with negative numbers on the thermometer. Tomorrow it's to be 41. I may go skinny dipping in the pond. LOL....See MoreFour day weekend Journal

Comments (40)lol... not to hijack this thread, but while I'll agree basketball takes more athleticicm, baseball takes more intelligence of the game and hand eye-coordination. I can hit three point shots all day and dunked when I was in highschool but put me in the cage against a 90 mph heater, even if I know it's coming I can't touch it. Another couple of notes: Dan seems to 'get the most' out of everything he plants. The blue iris against the yellow-gold leaves of A.Shir. 'Auream'. The blinding colors of A. pal. Beni Schischihenge. It's all just really amazing....See MoreLast minute changes / advice / owner builder ?
Comments (35)Samjal, I hope you build as a big a house as you and your family want and can comfortably afford! How great that you are so close to your large extended family. Given your lack of building experience, I agree you should not manage this process yourself. You will not be able to spot subtle things being done wrong. Building a home is a tough and complicated job. You need to find a builder/general contractor you like and has a good reputation and let them do their job. It may seem like it costs more to do it this way. But I believe you actually will spend way more than you expect if you try to manage it yourself, due to mistakes and things that need to be redone and delays. Not to mention the amount of time you need to be available to manage the job and frustrations. I am still confused about the financing. If you own the land outright, great, you do not have to pay for it. But if you pay for the home build instead of financing, you need to come up with the entire cost of the build. And do not forget to leave $ for landscaping, furniture, increase in property tax once the house is built, living costs while it is being built especially if it takes longer than expected, moving costs. As far as the design, work on it until it is just right for you. Owning the land is a great headstart. Congratulations on the opportunity to build your dream home! I do look forward to hearing more along the way if you are willing to post updates. Lafdr...See MoreMtnRdRedux
