I think you're not supposed to mulch iris so what do I do?
Comments (14)Brock, if anybody is guilty of writing too much, it is I, appreciate your input on the matter. I believe you are correct, it's Chinese or Japanese roof iris aka crested iris (did some googline). I did see zone 5b somewhere which is the colder limit for them, and I definitely think there is a difference b/t 5a and 5b, but I might be able to squeak some things through anyway. Now that is distressing that they may not survive the winter. I just set them out this afternoon, new area where there is no protection, and will have to mulch (or something) for the winter and expect to lose them. There are too many similar in this class to know exactly what to expect. If they make it through the summer, I could pot a few up and bring them inside, but that defeats my purpose as I have enough already to winter inside. They look so nice with that pretty foliage. Yes, I could move some, but I've got scads more plants waiting to be set out. Yes, I agree that some, not all, mail-order retailers exaggerate the zone business because they would lose sales. A topic for another time, tired after setting out 24 plants, used my bulb planter which made things go a little faster. I think I had my tiller set to till and not cultivate, oh well, it had gotten so bad so fast, it needed the extra power, but I'm worried if I could have compromised the roots forming on the Austins I set in there ealier. They should recover....See MoreWHY do the stores have irises now?
Comments (12)At some point in writing the following I came to think I should just erase this, because no one wants to hear my ridiculous rant, but it occurred to me that I must have felt it needed to be said. So, I apologize if I offend anyone, but I'm going to post this after all: I think the biggest issue is that people don't understand it is a rhizome and not a bulb. For some reason every plant that has a swollen base is a bulb. I used to try to find irises locally and they would almost always answer "Oh, they'll come in with the other bulbs-say the end of September." After years of disappointment after disappointment with nursery after nursery, 99% of my purchases are now made with iris specialists. More of my acquisitions are things I've worked for (most often a dig for a local club) than by purchases. Those dried up barely viable tortured things you find at the end of the season (if not plainly out of season) usually do recover by some horrible miracle of nature. It's always bothered me that the fact that irises can endure so much makes people think it's alright if they do... over and over-every year. Doesn't anyone promoting irises realize the detriment of consistently disappointing the general public and negatively affecting their experience with irises? Why not do an infinitesimal amount of research and care for your product properly? As long as we fall for the "yearly rescue" and purchase things just to save them, they'll assume their methods are acceptable. It is my opinion that it is most responsible to make your purchases from a reputable grower and (personally) I won't make significant (more than 2 or 3 variety) purchases with anyone that doesn't advertise with the American Iris Society. Supporting the AIS means a great deal to me and advertising in the AIS Bulletin makes me feel secure that the grower will be held accountable for their actions. It brings a sense of responsibility and consequence to a grower that simply listing their varieties on their site wouldn't imply. I'm sure things aren't so cut and dry (well maybe the mistreated irises are), but this is the way I happen to feel today. :)...See MoreWhy isn't my house selling?? What to do now?
Comments (49)Just wanted to post a happy ending update. Shortly after this thread ended, and my new pic were up, we did lower the asking price for sale and rent. Within a week we had 5 more showings for purchase(no offers) but a very qualified renter applied to rent. Unlike my previous tennants who had a very good job, low credit score, BUT always paid their rent on time.. this couple has an excellent income, good credit score and excellent references. They had always owned a home, but were transferred 18 months ago, were planning on it being temporary, so rented. The home they have been renting in Michigan is now up for sale, and I looked at the pictures and they have lovely furnishings, that will fit perfect in my home. I'm very confident it will make the next time I list my home much easier. I have stipulated in our contract a longer 'right to show' clause.. previously 60 days, now 90 days. They stated they might be interested in purchasing at a later date, but are unsure about a future transfer at this point. I would have rather sold the home, but at least we have rental income again- the same amount as I had previoulsy been receiving. And we roll the dice and hope there isn't any further decline in the housing market in the next year or two.. I do always learn by my mistakes! Next time I will insist on better pictures from the start.. besides that.. my realtor really did an excellent job for me, in keeping me well informed of any and all feedback and following up with people frequently. I know those things should just be expected.. but not so much so with my last realtor.. I would definately use her again..just not have her take the pictures!.. and she was very ok with that....See MoreWhat are you SUPPOSED to be doing?
Comments (38)*sigh* put the all the groceries and water away that we've bought over the past two days in case we lose power with Irene (on well & septic so, no power, no water!). I've just finished organizing all the school supplies so the kids can now fill their backpacks in case school starts Monday (I expect it to). I finally finished all the laundry (except microfiber cloths) so we'll all have clothes for the week if no laundry is possible. I've also gotten coolers ready, gotten the candles out, made sure the flashlights all have batteries (except the "D"...none to be found and I only have enough for one lantern!) and misc other tasks, again in prep. Then there was all the other stuff we've done today (moving porch, deck, and garden furniture into the garage & shed, & finished house cleaning b/c my sister from NC plans to come up tomorrow despite the hurricane - on her way to NJ...where it's supposed to be even worse than here!!!) So far, Irene doesn't seem to be as bad as I expected based on all the "talk" over the past couple of days (to my kids' dismay...they don't want to start school yet!)...but we are inland and not too close to the Chesapeake Bay......See MoreUser
