Pomponella--bigger than you might think!

I see Pomponella sometimes described as a cute smaller rose, about 2 ft. wide. I don't know where that myth comes from--cuz Pomponella is a rather large sprawling jolly green giant of a rose. Not that I object. Does a wonderful job of blotting out the unkept buildings on the property next door.

My only real complaint about Pomponella is that as floriferous as it is, dead-heading turns out to be a BIG chore!

However, she is still a keeper! somewhat BS-resistant also.

I don't remember for sure, but my guess is that my Pomponella is grafted--and quite possibly from Palatine Nursery, which means it is grafted on multiflora. Perhaps that accounts for why it is so vigorous and long-armed!

Interesting that Judy has two of them--one the smaller version I was trying to debunk (sorry, guess I was wrong) and the jolly green giant version like mine. Do we have two different cultivars out there on the market?

Judy, did both of your Pomponella's come from the same place? Both grafted, or own root, as the case may be?

As for location, mine gets about 5 hours of direct sun, but is somewhat on the borderline between pure sun and somewhat shady. My neighbor's giant oak tree to the east shades it most of the morning--til 10:30--and my birch trees on the west tend to shade it somewhat after 4-5 o'clock. Mid-day and a good portion of the afternoon, it gets strong overhead sun and southern sun.

I've only had mine for a couple years, so that is about all I can tell you about it.

This rose has me scratching my head. Grrrr. I bought one and loved it so much I bought another. The second one is a completely diff color now. It seems it was the right color at first but now it's a softer shade of pink. I'm going to go thru old pics to see when I can. I love it and my darker pink like yours only gets about 3 1/2 ft tall and the other one 5-6 ft long canes. It's quite confusing. Yours is absolutely gorgeous!! Judy

Wow! Yours is amazing! Mine def has the long canes but not stiff at all. I need to move her to a diff spot maybe....

Very cool! None of your Zone 3 neighbors are impressed, eh? I agree...my lemons seem to be the easiest to grow in the North. Limes seem the hardest! Here is a pic of my improved Meyer...it has about 15 lemons on it currently and I had to actually prune it quite a bit this year for my space. It is a grafted 3 year old tree from Hirt's gardens via Amazon. Now I buy from 4 winds but just found Logees in CT which saves a TON on shipping for me...just bought 3 more from them.

Tomato plants........tougher than you might think!

I agree Harry. I had many volunteer tomatoes come up too close together, and the forum advised me to move some. We put one little guy at the end of the row with it's own dripper. THEN came the searing heat wave. I tried to shade it. It has always remained scrawny and weak looking. Yesterday I noticed it has a tomato on it with several new flowers. It had a setback, but seems to have recovered nicely.

Cori Ann, I was able to root other roses, not florist roses. I only ever got one florist rose to root. And yes I understand there is something they treat the roses with that probably does inhibit the rooting process. But I know it can be done. There was a lady on the Forums several yrs ago who rooted lots of them. I haven't seen her on here in a long time. Ya know, last night I looked at that video you posted about growing roses from seed. It's funny, I kept watching all sorts of rose propagating videos on YouTube. Some are hilarious. And some are very informative. And some are interesting, but incomplete. They don't show the end results. Anyway, in one of the videos, I saw a rooting product that intrigued me, and I ordered some from Amazon last night. It's called "Clonex gel." It's a super-concentrated rooting hormone that seals the end of the cutting. The reviews sounded great. Most people got well over 90% success. That's of course many other types of plants, but some that were difficult to root otherwise. I can't wait to try it now!

Hey Kate. I'm thinking my first one which I think (lol) came from Palatine. It was to long ago to remember but I've ordered from Palatine ever since I went bonkers over roses. My darker side one opens much better than the light one. I don't know who I have but love them both.

I looked on HMF and it shows both colors so I guess both of mine are Pomponella. Just very strange.

Wow beautiful rose.. I love the color and long arms just arching out every which way. Is Pomponella fragrant? Im adding this one to my list.. I have the prefect spot for it. Thanks for sharing Kate

Wow - I'd love to have that between me and my neighbors! I always thought it was a small shrub and although I thought it cute I wasn't so interested. Your photo has put it higher on my might-need-to-purchase list! Beautiful.
